KENNEL NOTES

[By TAIL-W AGGER.]

Mr and Mrs Pye-Smith, of Nelson, have been holidaying m the south. These keen fanciers breed and snow the Wakatu pointers, their good bitch WaUatu Poi, having on more than one occasion been made best of her breed in show. Both Mr and Mrs Pye-Smith are greatly interested in kennel club affairs, and their daughter is the secretary of the Nelson Club. Canine affairs, said the visitors, were booming in Nelson, and a good show was being looked forward to. The show this year is to be in March, and it is expected that a North Island judge will officiate, although, as yet, nothing definite has been done in regard to this important official. Mrs Pye-Smith appears to be quite pleased with Mr Brough's newlyimported collie dog,' and as she ihas seen the collies in all the shows from Christchurch to Hastings her views' on Eden Excellent’s quality may be Well accepted. His perfect ear carriage—a serious fault in the majority of New Zealand collies —seems to have caught every fanciers’ attention, and his expression is such that everyone -wants to take him home oil sight, which, to a collie breeder spellg perfection in all the details which go to make up that elusive thing, “expression.” His coat, says Mrs Pye-Smith, is really gorgeous, even though it is not yet right owing to the change of seasons, and Mr Brough has no’ need to worry as to Rover’s capabilities as a stud dog, as a Jitter sired by him, from Diana of Lochiel, is expected to be on exhibition at the March show.

,fn addition to Mr Brough’s imported collie, there will be at the coming show an imported mastiff and perhaps some of her pups, an Australian-bred St Bernard, and the young borzoi purchased from the local Leithval kennels, so that this small olub does not, apparently, lack ambitious owners. Having advertised widely with no result for her dog, Mrs Corbett has asked the writer’s help. Beau is a wire-haired fox terrier, of white, black, and tan colouring, and very smart bearing. For the benefit of the uninitiated I might say that a wirehaired foxie is exactlly like his smoothcoated brother, and everyone knows what an ordinary fox terrier is like, with the exception of his coat, which is about 2in long and of a harsh, wiry texture.

Mr and Mrs Bracks are looking forward to some French bulldog puppies in the near future. These will bo especially welcome, inasmuch as they will be the first of their kind to make their appearance in this part of New Zealand.

Mrs Spiers, of Oamaru, lias not been enjoying the best of Health lately, so that things in Glenshee kennels have been very quiet. A start has been made again with Cumbrae Dusk, who has visited the Australian-bred Strathclyde Defender. Defender’s dam is Ornsay-bred, and Dusk’s dam is Ornsay Posio (imp.). Several Glenshee puppies have found new homes, oho at Invercargill, one at Omarnma, and another goes to Nightcaps in a day or two. Of the litter owned. by Mrs Spiers and Mr J. M'Donald (Timaru) in partnership, two puppies have been disposed of, one going to Miss O’Leary (Timaru) and the other to Mr A. G. M'Kenzie (Tokarahi), and a bitch puppy from the litter, which is by ch. Fairways Sensation from Glenshee Dorn, is to remain in tlig Black-and-White kennels at Timaru. Doubtless these kennels have been so named on account of the fact that both West Highland White and Scottish terriers are housed here. Mrs Spiers says that Mr M'Donald is decidedly pleased with the W.H.W. puppy ho purchased from the Lochiel kennels Mr'Spiers had no luck with the little bitch, Glenshee Jennifer, which he took possession of for himself. While out exercising Jenny was attacked by a pack of greyhounds and badly injured. She is ruihed as a show specimen, which is n pity, as she was very promisin'!. In addition to the French bulldog punpics, Mr and Mrs Bracks are now locking forward to two litters of West Highlands—one from cli. Robin Adair of Rossi,’vii and ch. Lochiel Lady Ross lyu, and the other from Lochiel Ardrishaig and Solwyn Gypsy.
