The Rev. Solomon Katz, Rabbi of Wellington, has been selected to represent New Zealand at a conference of Jewish leaders in Sydney commencing on January 29. He leaves by the Mono* wai from Auckland on Friday.—Press Association.

Mr H. M. Maekay left for Welling* ton this morning on transport business, Air Leslie T. M'Millan, of Alomington, has been appointed to a position in Suva, and left by the express today for Auckland to sail thence by, the Mariposa on Saturday. Mr J. F. Martin, who is severing his connection with Messrs P. Hayman and Co., was last evening met by the staff and presented with a silver tea set suitably engraved. The manager, Mr H. L. Smith, in making the presentation, remarked on the loyal service of Air Martin during the 12_ years of his employment, and wished him every success in future activities. Colonel J. L. Sleeman, the chief commissioner overseas of toe St. John Ambulance Brigade, who arrived at Wellington by the Mono wai on Tuesday, came to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. He was met by Colonel G. Barclay, chief commissioner for New Zealand, Dr Falconer, chairman of the Dunedin Centre of the association, Mr Peters, secretary, and Colonel Moray, district officer of the brigade. Colonel Sleeman was the guest of Colonel Barclay last night, and this morning he left for Queenstown,where he will visit friends for a few days. He will commence his tour of visitation of the centres of New Zealand at Invercargill on Monday. Captain and Airs L. H. Jones, whe are to take up the control of the work of the Salvation Army at Mosgiel, are not strangers to the southern portion, of the South Island. Airs Jones, as Lieutenant Smith, was stationed ati Alataura, Palmerston South, Milton* Balclutba, and Invercargill, while Captain Jones, as a lieutenant, was ab Cromwell, Nightcaps, Balclutha, and also for a short term at Dunedin, assisting at divisional headquarters during the Salvation Army jubilee. Mr Alexander W. Newton, of Wellington, has resigned from the position of Consul for Norway in New Zealand on account of health reasons. The resignation has»been officially accepted,and Mr Newton has been thanked for his services by • His Majesty King Haakon of Norway. Air Newton was appointed Consul for Norway in 1906,and was the first Consul for the nation in New Zealand after the separation or Norway and Sweden. He was decorated with the Order of St. Olaf in 1910.; Mr B. J. L. Lynneberg is Acting Consul until such time as a permanent appointment is made. Sportsmen through Otago and Southland will receive with regret the news of the death at Invercargill of Mr Alartin Kean. Air Kean, who was 44 years of age, was one of Southland a leading amateur athletes of 20 years ago, and at that time won the New. Zealand hammer throwing championship at the meeting held in Invercargill in the 1911-12 season. He was placed second in this 'event on several occasions. A splendid all-round athlete, he was also well known as a runner, while during the war he was prominent in the New Zealand Amy Rugby team. After retiring from the track he continued to take an interest in sport, being a member of the executive of the Limehills Athletic Club and of the Wmton. Jockey Club. ... Canon Percival James, of Wellington, who has been spending a holiday at the West Coast glaciers, will arrive in Dunedin to-day. A Press Association cable message from London states that Rawdon Afoumado, a son of Air Elie Afoumado, a Londoner, is affianced to Margaret, daughter of Sir James Gunson, of AuckLa'test registrations at the Grand Hotel are Air J. B. Currie (Midlothian. Scotland), Mrs G. Bruce-Smith and Miss N. Bruce-Smith (Sydney), and Airs Eric Trist (Christchurch). City Hotel guests include Misses and C. Pickworth (New South Wales), Misses D. Earl and Eileen Galvin, Mr C W Murphv (Christchurch), Aliss N. Geaney (Alakikihi). Mr, Alex. Trotter (Hillgrove), and Mr S. Dawson (Timaru).
