The Monterey, sailing from San Francisco, carried Kenneth Wakefield, who created a sensation by admitting that he was seeking refuge in Australia, fleeing from America’s gangsters. Wanefield, who was the proprietor of a famous tollhouse hostelry located at Whatman, Massachusetts, detailed harrowing experiences. He was terrorised hy bandits, who forced him to surrender his wealth at the point of firearms. Wakefield expects to remain in Australia for three months, hoping that the United States meanwhile will conquer banditry.
