CRICKET

THE PLUNKET SHIELD CANTERBURY’S SECOND INNINGS [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 6. The Plunket • Shield match was resumed half an hour earlier, stumps to be drawn at 6.30 this evening. After an hour’s play to-day Canterbury (who had four for 156 on Saturday) had taken the total to 237 for seven wickets. Not till the sixth over of the Mathe-son-Cowie attack did Hadlee (56) add a single, but his partner, O’Brien, was playing freely, and added 11 in the same period. Townsend relieved Cowie, and Hadlee, playing back, nearly fell into the leg trap. After half an hour’s play the score had reached 195, the partnership having put on 100. Vivian relieved Matheson, and in his first over broke the partnership, O’Brien walking out, missing, and being bowled. His innings had been characterised by forceful driving and excelent footwork. 203-5-54. In his next over Vivian bowled Hadlee with a full-tosser, which the batsman tried to slam: Roberts and Cobden were together for only a short period, Townsend skittling Roberts before he had scored, with the total unaltered. Merritt hit out at both bowlers, and Cobden also attacked Townsend, lifting him to the boundary and bringing 220 up. Despite the new ball, the batsmen quickly put on 50 runs at the expense of Cowie and Matheson. The resumption of the Townsend-Vivian attack slowed up the scoring, and Merritt's useful stand ended when he hit all. over a ball in Townsend’s second over. 265-8-29. Jackman failed to score, cocking Vivian up to Whiteaw at point. Cobden and Graham carried on, the former hitting 14 off Vivian in one over, including a sixer. The 300 was hoisted when Graham, who was stonewalling, cut Townsend to the boundary. Next ball he was dropped by Matheson in the slips. At the luncheon adjournment the pair were still together.
