—Ministerial.— The Hon. P. Jones (PostmasterGeneral), accompanied by Mrs Jones, left this morning for Wellington. Mr T. Vernon Griffiths has resigned from the conductorship of the Dunedin Orchestral Society,. A pleasant function took place on • New Year’s Eve at J. and W v Abbotts’ Union Bakery, King street," on the occasion of Mr P. Neilson, who 'had been foreman for upwards of 12 years, severing his connection with the firm, owing to his election to Parliament. Mr J. Abbott, in making a presentation of a travelling bag and set of military brushes on behalf of the firm, and staff, spoke in eulogistic terms of the happy relationship existing" between the recipient and staff, and expressed the firm’s appreciation of his loyal service during their long association, and wished him every success in his new sphere of life. He said that if Mr Neilson’s services in the interests of hia constituents were as thorough as those given as employee of the firm, they would not. regret his election to the position of member of Parliament. Mr W. Abbott, Mr F. Crawford, the new foreman, and others of the staff endorsed the remarks, and wished Mr Neilson every success as M.P. Mr Neilson, in thanking them for the presentation, stated tnat he had spent many happy days in the bakehouse, and would look back with pleasure to his association with the firm.

According to a Press Association cable message from London, Dr Alexander Begg, of Swansee, a son of the late Mr Alexander Begg, of Dunedin, is affianced to Rhoda, daughter of Sir Thomas Snow.

Dr Raymond Firth, son of Mr W. H. Firth, Auckland, is affianced to Rosemary, daughter of Sir Gilbert Upcott (states a Press Association cable message received from London to-day). His Honour Mr Justice Ostler is on his way back to New Zealand after nine months in South Africa, accompanied by Mrs Ostler. After a month in London they went to Cape Town, and from there they began a motor car journey of 16,000 miles, during which they travelled over a considerable part of South Africa, Northern Rhodesia, Tanganyika, Kenya, Uganda, and Nyasaland, going as far_ north as the Nile. They saw practically all the great lakes, mountains, and rivers of Central and East Africa.
