WORLD PEACE

APPEAL TO CHRISTENDOM Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 3. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York, in issuing an appeal entitled ‘ The Way of Peace,’ announce that the leaders of Christian communities throughout Europe have agreed immediately to send out an appeal to tlieir own peoples in the interests of peace. The archbishops emphasise that they are thus participating in an international endeavour to build world peace on a true and lasting foundation, because it is plain that international covenants and even the awful lesson of the horror and foolishness of the Great War are insufficient to ensure peace. Moreover, men’s natural instincts still cling to old, .deep-rooted suspicions and jealousies. It is also plain that civilisation is insufficient, as science, on which it relies, is forging weapons which may accomplish its own destruction. Accordingly it must be equally plain that only the incoming of God’s rule of righteousness, truth, honour, justice, and brotherhood among men can ensure peace. Christians everywhere, doubtless unconsciously, put natural patriotic instincts, prejudices, and emotions first, regarding the Kingdom of God as a true ideal, but remote from actual affairs. Any real loyalty to the Kingdom of God demands, however, that that process should be reversed. CATHOLIC CHURCH REFUSES TO CO-OPERATE LONDON, January 5. (Received January 6, at 12.30 p.m.) The Rev. S. M. Berry (Moderator of tho Federal Council of Free Churches of England) announces that the Catholic Church refused to co-operate with tho Anglican Archbishop’s appeal.
