GAMING RAID
TWENTY-SEVEN MEN FINED

WELLINGTON, January 6. The remainder of the men arrested in the raid of the New Century Club on Saturday were dealt with by Mr Luxford, S.M., to-day. The keeper of the club, John Duncan (34), a salesman, was fined £25. Andrew Lamb (35). a labourer, and John Ruben Dobson (36), a wharf labourer, were each fined £lO for assisting in the conduct of the establishment. The men were allowed a month ia which to pay. The 24 men remanded from Saturday on a charge of being on the premises were each fined £2, to be paid within 14 days. Duncan said he took over the clubfrom December 27 from the previous owner, who used the rooms solely for playing cards. The price agreed upon was £BO, of which he paid £4O in cash. Lamb at no time received any payment from the club for his services, and Dobson received no fixed wag 6, depending upon the generosity of members. The business conducted was very small, and had the raid been carried out on any night except Iriday or Saturday, only a handful of members would have been found. At no time had the nightly attendance exeeeded 45.
