Last year the Gravesend Sea School supplied 526 (57.7 per cent.) of the 911 entrants into the British Merchant Navy who had successfully completed the educational course provided by such accredited training institutions for th«> lower grades of the merchant service., The school, which is supported by thw Treasury and the Shipping Federation* was established 'in 1918, and since then has done good work in furnishing British ships with capable personnel. In spite, however, of the steady demand for youths hall-marked with, the Gravesend Sea School standard of proficiency, and the excellent reports received concerning its trainees, the 1934 output shows a very serious decline. In 1926, , for example, the number drafted inta the coasting and home trades "was 59* while the foreign trade absorbed 997* a total of 1,056, or almost double last year’s aggregate. The committee of management is experiencing , difficulty in filling the school to anything like, capacity, the principal shortage being among those who desire training a* stewards. Those admitted to the school must be over 16 years of, age* of stout build and. good character. The physical standard insisted upon is s high one, and though this may account for many rejections the committeeiwould be well advised in maintaining it (states an exchange). They have* however, reduced ,to the minimum the substantial deposit required for outfit* and this may have the desired effect of increasing the number of applicants for training. With regard to ordinary seamen, a scheme has been brought into operation, by which selected boya from the school may be registered a a provisional seamen of the Royal NavalReserve, and thus become enrolled in! the R.N.R. at an eqrlier stage of their sea service, an arrangement which haa the approval of both shipowners and the Admiralty. ‘
