AFTER SEVENTEEN YEARS

QUEENSLAND PROSPEROUS UNDER LABOUR [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 3. Although visiting New Zealand primarily for a holiday from his administrative duties, the Hon. M. P. Hynes, Minister of Labour and Industry in the Queensland Government, who is at •present in Wellington, is taking an opportunity while in the Dominion to investigate tho methods adopted here of dealing with Governmental activities similar to those over which he exercises control in tho Australian State. Mr Hynes said in an interview tonight that he felt confident that the optimism shown for the future of the Dominion would be realised. He had been impressed with the country’s scenic beauty and had a high opinion of the efficiency of the Tourist Department. There appeared to be some timidity at the advent of a Labour Government in New Zealand, but he added there was no reason for that. Queensland had returned a Labour Government in 1915 and there had been a Labour Government in power eyer since, with the exception of the period between 1929 and 1932 ; After 17 years of Labour administration the people of Queensland enjoyed the lowest cost of living in tho Commonwealth. They worked the shortest working week and received the highest wages, and the primary producers were enjoying more prosperity than those in the other States of the Commonwealth. The pastoral land of New Zealand was described by Mr Hynes as wonderful. “In Queensland wo talk of acres to sheep, but over here you apeak of sheep to tbo acre,”.be added.
