CHESS CONGRESS

THE ELEVEHTH ROUND , 1 ” ' [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 3. The New Zealand chess championship tourney was continued to-day. The following are the results of the eleventh round;— Armstrong v. Rutberfurd. Armstrong opened with the English game, adopting a double fiauchetto for his bishops. The development was seemingly equal till Rutberfurd gave up an exchange of the knight for two pawns. A difficult end game'.involving risks on both sides ended in a draw. Severne v. Scott.—Scott adopted the Sicilian game against Severn’s King’s Pawn opening. ' Early exchanges of minor pieces gave Severne tbe better development. The middle game was a series of exchanges in an endeavour to improve the positions. Severne entered the end game with a positional advantage, but he could make no progress against Scott’s careful defence, and a draw resulted. Erskine v. Dyer.—The' former played the English game and early pushed forward his queen side pawns. Dyer made no adequate defence to Erskine’s mobile' changing attack and lost an exchange. Later Erskine threatened to win a queen’s rook pawn with a rook attack to follow, whereupon Dyer resigned. Burry v. Jones.—This was a Queen’s Pawn game. Early exchanges by Jones gave him the better pawn position, but Burry, playing a good defence, made it impossible for Jones to force, the position without serious risk. Burry offered a draw, and Jones agreed. —Position of Players.—The following is the position of the players after the eleventh round of the championship;— Gyles "Purdy 9 *Erskine 8 Burry ... 7 "Jones .'•• 6 a Severne ... ... ... 6 Beyer ... ... ... 4J "Baeyertz ... ... 4 "Rutberfurd ... ... 4 Abbott Si "Scott 3.i "Kelling 3 "Armstrong 3 .
