ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE [Per United Press Association.] HASTINGS, December 11. An elderly man,' a retired farmer, of Raupare, whose mental condition has warranted an attendant for some time* and whose name was suppressed in the meantime, was charged before Mr Mil-" ier, S.M., this morning with attempt* ing to murder his wife about 9 o’clock’ last night by cutting , her . throat. The wife is now making, satisfactory progress in the hospital. The accused was remanded for a week for an alienist to investigate his mental condition. ' Senior-sergeant Macnamara said the accused, who was nearly 70, attacked his wife with a knife and cut her, throat while she was writing a letter* The attendant,, who lived with; the aci cuscd and his wife, was out of the room at the time. He heard screams, and ’ when_ he went into the room J he saw the wife with a gash in her throat* The police and a doctor were sum* moned. _ The Magistrate said the facts suggested that the accused was mentally, unbalanced, which he found was supported in a Supreme 1 Court order Ire* fating to his property. After th« alienist’s report had been received, if the accused stood his trial, his.name, would be published. Till then it waj right that the name be suppressed.
