CHESS CHAMPION ARRIVES
PARTICIPATING IN DOMINION TOURNEY [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 11. Tbe chess of Australia, Mr C. J. S. Purdy, arrived by the Niagara. Referring to the New Zealand championship meeting in Wellington during the Christmas holidays, he said that he had noted the section play was to be. for the first time in ,the Dominion championships.' ' Trying out a new idea ' sometimes caused a temporary disturbance, buf afterwards the. system worked smoothly. There was no sectional play in the Australian championships, entries being whittled down to fourteen by a process of elimination. Each State nominated one player for the championship, and after that, playing strength only was, considered.
