TUATAPERE SPORTS
The somewhat staggering totals of £293 in cash and £SO in trophies are being offered for the Tuataperc sports on New Year’s Day (says the ‘ Southland Times ’). Thus an athlete who, wins any one event or even secures a second will go home considerably richer for his day’s efforts. With prizes totalling £343 it is very probable that the twenty-fourth fixture will be a record one for the Tiiatapere Axemen’s Athletic Society, for the cream of the South Island’s running, cycling, and bushcraft talent will bo competing. The 135yds handicap will be worth £37, of which the winner takes £2O and the president’s £5 5s cup. Other events and total prize money are: 75vds (£Bl, lOOvds (£7), 220yds (£8), 440yds (£8 10s), 880yds (£l6), one mile (£l6). The totals for the 15m under-hand chop and the 12in standing chop are £47 and £22 respectively. The 12in under-hand chop is valued at £lB, the ISin double-handed sawing at £l4, the 18in single-handed sawing at £B. and the novice chop at £6. There will be three cycle events —the half-mile, one-mile, and two-mile races —offering total prize money of £B, £lO, and £l2.
