DUNEDIN CLUB'S CARNIVAL A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE •With improved performances on previous carnivals this season, very large fields 'and close and exciting finishes in the majority of events, the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club s annual carnival at the Municipal Baths last night before a good crowd of spectators proved one of the .most successful fixtures that has been held here for soino time, the performances of many of the younger swimmers especially auguring well for the success lor the Otago intermediate and junior championships next week, ■
The Otago flying squadron 500yds relay championship was retained by the Dunedin Club after a close tussle with Kiwi, and Dunedin’s win was, all the more meritorious, as three of its_ selected team were unable to swim. -Had they taken part very fast time would probably have been recorded. In the Kiwi team, Miss I. Purdie, the promising intermediate, swam a very last 100yds, returning 68sec for her section of the distance, which is one of the fastest times ever put up by a lady swimmer in Dunedin. The 100yds short-limit handicap was won by J. Young, of the Christchurch United Club, who swam a good race to win the final in 64sec. TThe Zealand champion, W. J. Jarvis, won a heat in 58 4-ssec, which was the fastest time put up during the evening. Jarvis was swimming very easily, and did not appear ■to extend himself to , his full capacity. The 66 2-3yds hack stroke, handicap was won by a Kiwi intermediate, Miss G. Harris, who swam well, while S. W. Jarvis (Dunedin j went a very good race for second placeajrom one of the badk marks. S. W.Tlarvis was also associated with H. Devlin in winnuig the life-saving handicap. Some very fast times were returned by competitors in the 100yds breast stroke handicap, the final of which was won by W. Darling (Kaikorai) off the limit mark. Reg. Gcddes (Kiwi), from the scratch mark, finished third in his heat, and went close to his New Zealand intermediate record time of 73 3- while in winning her heat Miss W. Dunn, the brilliant Kiwi intermediate, returned the fast time of Imin 26 4- _ . Considerable interest was taken in the junior and novice handicaps, the 33 l-3yds junior dash being won by H. Borland (Dunedin), while B. Ingram (Dunedin) won the novice event and took the cup presented by Mr C. W. Elliott. ■ . . . The Otago ladies’ diving champion, Miss Gwen Rix, gave a fine display to win the interclub diving handicap, in which some good exhibitions were seen. The 66 2-3yds second-class handicap was won by A. R. Duff, a-J£iwi intermediate, who swam well both in heat and final, and the 66 2-3yds ladies’, handicap was won by Miss A. Gillies, the Kiwi intermediate, Miss P. Sporle (Dunedin) also swimming well fpr second place after returning 43sec in her heat Dunedin No. 1 won the six-a-side relay handicap, which produced the.usual exciting contests; r and the water polo match between Kiwi A and Dunedin, A provided a splendid game. Thomson (Zenith), off 7sec, swimming over the first lap and being ahead of Miss Abernethy and Miss Gillies at the turn. Miss Gillies displaced the junior champion in the second lap, and won by a foot, a touch between second and third. Time, 48 3-ssec.
Second Heat.—Miss P. Sporle (Dunedin), Isec, 1; Miss D. Pope (Kiwi), Ssec. 2; Miss G. Harris (Kiwi), ssec, 3. Four starters. Miss Pope led until a few yards from the finish, but Miss Sporle, who swam with plenty of dash, caught her and won by a yard, a touch between second and third. Time, 43sec. —Final.— Miss A. The divers were required to perform a backward pike and forward somersault running from the 10ft board and two voluntaries, and •a further improved standard was noticed, although 'of the competitors . still lacked _ finish in some of their dives. Only starters. This' was a well-con-tested race, Kiwi holding the lead in the early stages, only to have it wrested from them by Dunedin’s wellbalanced team in the final stages. Mathieson gave Kiwi a lead of syds over Williams at the end of the first 100yds, which ho loft behind in 62 3-ssec, and swimming a very good race, Miss Purdie covered the next 100yds in 68sec, Kerr reducing Kiwi’s lead to 2yds in spite of fouling the ropes. Byrnes and Lawrence had a keen tussle over the third stage of the journey, Byrnes touching a shade ahead of Lawrence, Dunedin’s time for 300yds being 3min 18 4-ssec. Dunedin assumed control in the ; fourth hundred, Toase leaving tlie distance behind in 61 2-sscc, and giving S. W. Jarvis a lead of 3yds when ho took over for the last hundred. Geddes followed Thomas, but ho could not hold Jarvis, who increased the gap, winning by 9yds, and Jarvis’s time for his 100yds being 60 l-ssec. The winning team’s time was smin 21sec.

Dunedin A (premiers for the last five years) met Kiwi A at water polo, and after a fast and interesting game Kiwi won by 5 goals to 3, the winners showing superior combination and indulging in some very bright movements. Dunedin’s shooting was rather faulty, though its positional play improved in the second spell. Kiwi led by 5-2 at half-time, but Dunedin added a goal in the second spell. Go.als for the winners were scored by Gcddes (3), Mathieson, and Thomas, and for Dunedin Barry, Elliott, and Williams scored. ’ The teams were: Dunedin A—P. W. Harkess, C. W. Elliott, B. Kerr, D. Newell, N. Williams. J. Barry, and .1. 0. Byrnes. Kiwi A—D. Pickard, O. Holland, C. Smith, M. 'Taylor, K. Gcddes, A. Thomas, and P. E. Mathieson, Mr D. T. Woodlield was the refeceg.
