CITY RATES
RATE OF PAYNE*! SATISFACTORY PENALTY iMPWEO AFTER DECEMBER IS One of the chief concerns of property owners in the city at present is the payment of rates to the City Corporation for the year endmg March 31* 1936. Bate notices were sent out some months ago, it being pointed out that any rates unpaid after December 1” would carry a penalty of 10 per cent. Inquiry of the city treasurer this morning revealed that, up to the end of November, the sum of £43,286 had been collected at the Town Hall, .this amount being 16.54 per l cent, of Dio total sum of £261,564 struck as rates for the 1935-36 financial year. , At the end of November last year the.amount received was £41,627, which represented 16.277 of the total sum of £255,825 struck for 1934-35. . The above figures show a slight improvement in the amount collected this year as compared with the previous year. Since November 30 rates have been coming in freely, and there will orobably be the usual eleventh-hour rush during the last few days ill order to avoid the 10 per cent, To obviate the rush and waiting that usually occur during the last few days ratepayers would be well advised to make their payments as early as possible.
