DA\flN SELECTED AUCKLANDER ALSO SUGGtESSFUL The fine record of the University of Otago in producing students gaining Rhodes Scholarships is maintained once again, Daniel Marcus Davin, M.A., being one of the two awarded scholarships by the Selection Committee in Wellington yesterday. The other successful candidate was John Derek Lewis, 8.A., of Auckland University College. Daniel Marcus Davin was born at Invercargill in 1913 alnd received his primary education at the Marist Brothers’ School, obtaining dux honours in 1926. In 1928 and 1929 he sat for the Public Service entrance examination, and on each occasion he was placed first in Southland. In the latter year lie matriculated and was awarded a special scholarship to study at the Sacred Heart College, Auckland. He was also dux of the Marist Brothers’ High School. In 1930 he was engaged in post-matriculation work at the Sacred Heart College, and was the winner of a gold medal for Latin and of the University National Scholarship awarded for excellence in history, Latin, and English. Mr Davin entered the University of Otago in 1931, and in the annual class results took first place in English and Latin, and also won the Gilray Memorial Prize for English. In 1932 he was again first in English and Latin, and also in history. He completed his B.A. degree in 1933 and was senior scholar in Latin, and George Young Scholar. He received the highest marks in Latin for New Zealand. In 1934 he took special honours in English and graduated M.A. with first class honours. He also took classes in philosophy. He was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship. During the present' year Mr Davin has been pursuing the study of Latin in the Special Honours School. Apart from his intellectual achievements, he has been prominent in the administrative and athletic side of the schools which he has attended. He was

captain of the Marist Brothers’ High School at Invercargill in 1929, and was interested in dramatic and' debating work. During his association with the University lie has been a constant contributor to the ‘ Critic ’ and to the 1 Review,’ and this year he was appointed, for the third time, associate editor of the latter publication. He has also been successful in various literary competitions in the last two years. He lias been associated in official capacities with the Arts Faculty Students’ Association, the Debating Society, and the Literary and Dramatic Society. In 1934 he was a member of the Students’ Council. During the present year he has lectured to the Literary Society, and later he will be giving a course of lectures to the W.E.A. In athletics Mr Davin has had a successful career. In 1929 he was long-distance running and broad jump champion of the Marist High School, and a member of the Rugby team. At the Sacred Heart College he took part in football. and in running championships, and, since entering the University, has been a member of the E, D, and C Rugby teams in successive years. He has also been actively interested in lawn tennis, swimming, and shooting. John Derek Lewis,.who'is 22 years of age, began his education at King’s School. Remuera, where he was first in his form' throughout. At King’s College he was first in' his form from 192 G to 1928, and was dux of the college in 1930. besides winning various prizes. Passing on to the Auckland University College, he won a University national scholarship in 1932, and was also Maria Blackett scholar .and senior scholar in Greek. In term results he secured first-class passes in history, French, Latin, and Greek. In degree examinations he was first for New Zealand in Latin in 1933 and in Greely in 1934. He took his B.A. degree this year. Mr Lewis’s athletic record began with the captaincy of the King’s School eleven in 1925. At King’s College he was captain, of the first eleven for three years. _ In the 1929-30 season he was captain of a combined secondary schools’ cricket team, and was captain of an Auckland junior representative team in 1931. In Rugby football he was captain of the first fifteen both at King’s School and at King’s College, and has been in the University College senior A team. As an athlete he made an unbeaten record in the junior 440yds combined secondary school sports, and has represented the Auckland University in the 100yds and 220yds races. He was one of the junior and senior doubles champions in lawn tennis at King’s College. At the Auckland University College Mr Lewis has been secretary of the Men’s House Committee and of the Executive Committee of the Students’ Association. This year he is president of the-association. It is his intention to take up work of an educational character with the ultimate aim of a headmastership of a secondary school.
