GIRL GUIDE NOTES

[By Guider.] PHYLLIS CHEESEMAN CUP. The competition this year was won by 6th Dunedin (Columba), with 14th Dunedin (St. Hilda’s) as runners-up. INTERPROVINCIAL COMPETITIONS. Otago made a very good showing in the interprovincial competitions this year. The Ist Otago Lone Company won the Lone Banner, Knox Rangers tied with Awhina (Auckland) for the Bledisloe Cup, and the Otago team was second in the Jellicoe Slpeld competition, Canterbury being the winners in the last. Since Canterbury makes a special feature of ambulance work, having a St. .lohn division among the Guiders, Otago’s second place is very creditable. The Bledisloe Cup will remain the first six months in Otago. The competition this year aroused more interest than it has ever done. A large number of companies competed, and the standard was particularly high. The examiner remarked that “ Knox Cottage” was

really a house one would like to live hi.' It has been booked at present for Gisborne, to be shown to association members there; then Invercargill has asked for it. It will return : to its rightful owners early in the yoari Knox Rangers are to be warmly congatulated on winning this cup again. They put in splendid work, "and it is good for them to feel that their efforts have met; with such success. The matter whether there should be a complete rest from cups was discussed, but it was decided to retain the Bledisloe Cup, with the proviso, however, that the test should be simple, not one to cut too much into company time. The following subject selected should be possible of working out by even the smallest company:—■“ Illustrate any scene in the history of international Guiding solely by means of natural objects (wood, shells, cones, feathers, seeds, grasses) collected by the company during the period December, 1935, to September, 1936, exhibits accompanied by a list of every material used and a description of how they were found, to be at Dominion H.Q. by September 30, 1936. Glue is the only manufactured material that may be used.” e It was pointed out -by the sub-com-mittee which brought forward this suggestion, a committee that consisted of heads of departments, that this subject brought in most of the sections of Guiding, handcraft, Nature, intelligence or imagination international igterests, while the service aim could be achieved if the model were given away to a hospital or orphanage. There is a new book on Nature care that might help with this competition. MARTON TRAINING CAMP. As numbers applying are not as large as expected, headquarters is willing to allow Guiders to attend who have not their campers’ license, but have had experience in camping. Any Otago Guiders who would like to go to the camp should apply to Miss Hay, and if may bo possible from the camp fund to assist them in travelling expenses, COMMISSIONERS’ CONFERENCE. > The commissioners’ conference held i last week in Christchurch was successful

from every point of view. Though, the opening day was cold and. wet, the remaining days were beautifully fine. The conference involved many hour* of worthwhile discussion. The following points are of general interest:— (1) It was decided to institute a new badge for older Guides and Rangers, called the Truby King badge. This badge will cover instruction On the care of children from birth to the age of two; years. (2) The cook’s badge was revised and the new syllabus for New Zealand will be published in the ‘• New Zealand Guider.’ Thanks are due to Miss Stenhouse, of the home science department,• for help in this connection. The cooking section of the pioneer badge was also changed, and now reads: To be able to cook four of the following;— Porridge, stew,. bacon, grilled meat op fish damper or twist. , - (3) The name of the ‘ New Zealand Guider ’ is to bo changed to a suitable Maori one. as it was felt that the present name is a little confusing with that of the English paper. (4) It was decided to have no; Guide Cup for intcrproviucial competition■ for 1936. The Bledisloe Cup will, however, bo comoeted for. „ ■ (5) The matter of the ambulance badge was discussed- and it was decided that adherence to P.O.R. in-this connection would not involve hardship. Those renewing the badge will_ require, if over 16. to take the senior test. Where courses of lectures are not possible it may be possible to arrange for tuition by correspondence. (6) The new rauger test was discussed, and it was pointed out.that, while it was not binding until it appeared in P.0.R., it would be:-worth while for some Banger companies to try it out and so be able to give an opinion on its value. (7) It was decided that black shoes and stockings be adhered to as official uniform in New Zealand. ’ THE OFFICE. The office will be closed, from December 11, and will reopen in February at the new provincial headquarters at the corner of Dowling and Princes streets.
