DUTCH GIRL'S SWIMMING PERFORMANCES Recently at Copenhagen Willie ( den Ouden, the Dutch girl, swam 200 metres in 2.25 0-10, clipping no less than 3 3-10 sec off her own world’s record, She did not finish her world’s record breaking effort there. At Aahrus a few days later she did even better by covering 300 metres in 3.50 2-5, bettering by no less than 7 3-ssec her own world’s record, established in 1933 (says the ‘ Sporting Globe ’). The American records for the distances are still credited to Helene Madison at 2.34 3-5 and 3.59 5-10, the 1932 Olympic 100 and 400 metres champion; but Mary Lou Petty, of Washington A.C., lately claimed the 200metre record with a performance of 2.34, put up in a 60-metre pool. That works out at approximately 2.30 for the distance in a 25-metre bath.

At the Copenhagen carnival, at which. Miss den Ouden appeared, Poul Petersen, of Denmark, created it new Danish record in defeating William Grut, champion of Sweden, over 400 metres in 5.7 2-5, free style. Four Spanish records fell in national championship events at Valencia. A. Lepage reduced the time for 400 metres free style to 5.9 3-5; L. Sapes, that for 400 metres breast stroke to 6.26 3-5; and the team of the Barcelona S.C. (Sabata, Sabater, Oarullo, and Lepage) clipped the 800 metres teams’ relay record to 9.47 4-5. The fourth record to fall was that for the 400 metres teams’ free style relay for women, which was reduced to 5.22 by •Misses Soriano, Barnst, Eos, and C. Soriano, of the Barcelona S.C. DETAINED TITLE. Cecil Deans, the youthful holder of the English long distance championship, retained his title after an eventful race over the five-mile course on the Thames. When off Chiswick, Deans was affected by cramp, threw up his hands and sank; but,~as boats raced to Ills assistance he bobbed up again and, turning on his back for a spell until the attack had passed off, struck out again and won in Ih 3min 47 2-ssec a minute ahead of the second man, E. J. Goodwin. English experts are enthusing over' the possibilities of 16-year-old Gladys Morcnn, of Dudley, who recently defeated Cecilia Wolstonholme, national 440yds champion, in a 400yds race swum in 5.17. ■ Another Dutch girl of rare promise has been developed in Greta Brouwers, who is credited with having swum 200 metres at breast stroke in a 25-metre pool in 3.6 3-5. Miss Brouwers is a fine swimmer and will have to be reckoned with at Berlin, for reports are to hand that she is improving at a great X'ate. Dutch experts expect her to go close to 3min for the distance within the next few months. ... Jean Taris is jubilant. He is specialising over 400 metres in view of the Olympic Games event in August at Berlin, and when he heard that American Jack Medica had won the 400 metres race in Japan in 4.45 1-5, he expressed elation. Jean expected a better time. Now, he stated, he feels confident regarding his chances in the Olympic 400 metres classic. Taris has reason for bis optimism, for he has not been in real top form for some considerable time, and it must be remembered that he was beaten by the narrowest of margins by “ Buster ” Crabbe in the Olympic 400 metres championship at Los Angeles in 4.48 5-10.
