The Middlemarch Water Supply Committee wrote further on the proposed water supply.—Cr Howell said he did not think the riding funds should be spent on an expensive survey of the district. A rough estimate of the cost should be made, and it should be ascertained whether the ratepayers' who would benefit by the scheme would be agreeable to paying higher rates in order to pay for it. In any event, he was of the opinion that the people of Middlemarch should go in for a drainage scheme at the same time. If they got the water supply it would be only a short time before they would want drainage, and it would be better to make one expense of the two jobs.—The Clerk produced a plan showing the proposed water scheme, which, he stated, was estimated to cost £1,400 for 2in reticulating piping. There was rateable property to the area to a value of £28,600, and a rate of about 2Jd would be required to cover the interest and sinking fund.*—lt was decided to send on the financial details available and a sketch plan of the propose pipe line.
