OLD CAVERSHAM TUNNEL
CONVERSION FOR TRAFFIC PURPOSES ADVOCATED BY MR A. E. AHSELL “It would quickly servo to bring Green Island to Dunedin,” said Mr A. It. Anscll, in strongly advocating the conversion of the old Caversbam railway tunnel into a traffic tunnel in the course of a speech at the Green Island Borough jubilee celebrations on Saturday night. He had discussed the scheme with engineers, who had assured him that there wore no difficulties to hinder the. project, and ho was satisfied that the tunnel could he nnuffi a valuable asset, particularly to the industrial community of Green Island. “ Tlio borough is the homo of important secondary industries,”, said Mr Anscll, and it has already been stated to-night that it is destined to become one of file 1 chief residential areas of Dunedin,” The Green Island Council

A large amount of expenditure would be involved, but the work would more than compensate for the financial outlay that would bo necessitated. The ell'ect that the tunnel would have on the popularity of Green Island as a residential area was stressed by the speaker, who remarked that the scheme had been tentatively discussed on various occasions, but no decision to bring it to fruition had as yet been made. °He strongly urged that the matter should bo given serious consideration.
