BANDS’ GARDEN FETE

CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS CONTEST FUND Finding funds for their expenses to the various contests is always a big puzzle that annually confronts citybands, which, however, are usually well supported at functions held by them for the purpose of raising money. It was therefore expected to find a large number of the public at the St. Kilda Municipal and ‘Dunedin Highland Pipe Bands’ combined garden fete at the residence of Mr S. Solomon, Bellekuowes, on Saturday afternoon. Visitors were delighted with the attractive gardens and shrubberies, which looked beautiful, despite the effects of recent windy weather, and altogether an enjoyable afternoon was experienced by all in attendance.

Mr J. L. Gardiner (president of the St. Kilda Band) welcomed the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, who, in opening the function, said that the bands had rendered valuable service to the people of Dunedin, and he expressed the hope that those present would show their appreciation by supporting the fete liberally. Ho expressed the thanks of the organisers to Mr Sciomon for the use of his grounds. He mentioned that Dunedin was the proud possessor of two champion bands, and concluded by wishing both bands all success for the future.

Mr J. Hope, (president of the Dunedin Pipe Band) thanked Mr Stewart for opening the function, and cheers were given for him. The fete was organised by Mr J. S. Douglas, and the conveners of the various" stalls were: Tea rooms, Mrs J. I. Gardiner; flower stall. Mrs' G. Errington; ice cream stall, Mrs A. Homer; soft drinks, Mrs Peter Findlay; fruit and sweets stall, Mrs 11. Colvin. Business at the well-laden stalls was brisk throughout the afternoon, and a satisfactory sum was realised. Proceedings were enlivened by an enjoyable musical programme by tho St. Kilda Band, under the conductorship of Mr A. W. E. Webb, and by the Pipe Band, directed by Pipe-major Walker.
