SPRING RACING
SOUTHLAND R.G. MILFORD WINS THE CUP INCREASED TOTALISAT9R RETURNS After a welcome shower the previous afternoon the course at Invercargill wan in perfect order for the one-day Spring Meeting staged by the Southland Racing Club. Until just before the final race was set down for decision, ■when light rain commenced to fall, the weather was dull but pleasant, and an excellent crowd was present, the gate receipts being £347 Is, as compared with £284 19s on the Saturday of the Autumn Meeting held last May. Though only three first favourites were returned ■winners the racing interesting. Of the nine horses trained at Wingatui who took part at the meeting only Toreador succeeded in winning. After running second last in the mile and a-quarter race, with a stronger and more experienced horseman up he won the concluding event, over a mile, and returned the best dividend of the season in Otago and Southland. One of the most pleasing features of the meeting was the excellent starting by Mr T. Marshall, the club’s caretaker. 3t was the most satisfactory starting that has been seen in Otago or Southland courses for many years. Despite the good dividends returned by the winners in all but three races speculation was brisk, and £10,652 10s was handled, as compared with £9,09b on the second day (Saturday) or last season’s Autumn Meeting. Detailed results:— SOUTHLAND HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, lOOsovs; second 15, third 5. For horses that have completed three ■ hurdle races or steeplechases and hacks. Minimum weight 9st. Im.

Cl.air.] Thornton was withdrawn from the Southland High - weight Handicap, for which Golden Lap was sent out £2O 10s better fancied than Sungem, with June the Third a good third choice. From an excellent start the field ran m close order for over a furlong before Impala showed out. Passing the six-furlong barrjer Impala was two lengths clear of Tautau Maid and June the Third. The last-named ran up into second place, and Impala led her, Gas Raid, and Tautau Maid across the top and into the straight. Then Impala drew away to win by three lengths from Galleon, who finished fast from the home turn. June the Third was two and a-half lengths away third, just in front of Golden Lap, with Tautau Maid and Sungem.
Iron Duke was the only withdrawal from the Waverley Harness Trot, and Harold Guy was fnade_£l4 10s better favourite than the Nonna GrattanBellc Grattan bracket, with Gold Valley also supported. Autogo and Gold Valley led Master Garry, Norma Grattan, and Harold Guv passing the stand, and there was little change in the leading division until a mile had been covered. Then Bello Grattan ran up into third place. Autogo led Gold Valley, Belle Grattan, Norma Grattan, and Walter Gay into the straight, and held on well to win by a good length from Walter Gay. Gold Valley was placed third, with Master Garry, Norma Grattan, and Harold Guy ne.tt.
Hula Belle was withdrawn from the Flying Handicap, and Beam was sent out £3B better fancied than Bay Duke.
From a perfect line Bay .Duke was the first to show out, ami ho led Beam round the far turn, with All Humbug next. Then Beam ran up on io Bay Duke’s quarter, and the pair drew out three lengths clear of All Humbug. Bay Duke, on the rails, had a slight advantage turning for home, and drew away to win by two lengths from Beam, who beat Enwood by a similar margin. Great Shot was another two lengths away fourth.
Kingussie was missing from the field for the Roslyn Trial Handicap, and Wild Career was sent out £46 better
