SATURDAY’S YACHTING
VAL WINS AGAIN Saturday’s Sanders Cup trial race was sailed over the North-east Harbour Boating Club’s course in a northeasterly. The Avind, though of considerable force, at the start, fell away with the ebb tide, and by the time the race finished there was barely a catspaAV rulHing the surface of the Avater. Squib was the only boat to shorten sail, though all carried four in the crews. ! Val led throughout tbe race and Avas never really threatened. It Avas only after coming on the wind at the marie oil’ Russell's that she had the legs of her opponents, and, barring accidents, she Avas bound to Avin.
The boats, with tbe names of the skippers, were;—Val, I. M'Grath ; Betty. W. Mason; Eileen, E. Cuthberte; Squib, P. Walker. All the boats made a poor start, Eileen and Squib being caught on the wrong tack when tbe gun went and were forced to make a short leg inshore before standing out into the wind. A close race resulted to the first mark, but Val maintained her first place, and was followed by Betty 25sec later. Eileen was 50sec behind the first boat, and Squib a long way back. Spinnakers were broken out on the run, Val giving a particularly quick exhibition. Betty was skying her spinnaker and planing in fine style. Squib appeared lo be having trouble with her spinnaker and finally took it in for a time. On the run A 7 al drew away and rounded the pile at Macandrew Bay Imiu ahead of Betty, and Eileen was about losec back. Squib was ste-diily dropping back. On the second portion of the run Betty made up a few seconds and was 57sec behind at the top huoy. . Eileen was only 3sec astern, and Squib' was 6min_ssec behind the first boat. On the wind again Eileen was cleverly handled and quickly went into second place, replacing Betty. Val was looting it through the water very fast, and passed the clubhouse. Imin 25sec before Eileen. Betty was 2min SSsec astern of the leader. The wind, which had been falling away all the afternoon, now fell very light, and the sails were almost empty at times.
After passing the clubhouse Eileen and Bett.v engaged in a tierce tussle for a time, and when the boats crossed tacks Hetty was to weather of Eileen, but nest time the boats crossed the position was reversed. Val, however, was steadily forging ahead and was Drain ]sseo in the lead of Eileen and Betty, both of which turned Raynbirds buoy almost together. _ Val quickly had her spinnaker drawing for the final run to the finishing line, and the other 'boats followed suit. Squib was about lOmin behind the first boat at this buoy. Eileen and Betty were .racing For the line almost neck and neck. Off Dublin Bay Betty went ahead and led Eileen over the line by drain user. Squib was a long way behind. Val came home with the last of the wind, and Betty finished in only light airs, with Eileen 'lying becalmed some distance astern, Squib being several minutes after ber, but bringing along a light air. She was unable, however. to pass Eileen before reaching the finishing line. The finishing times were;— , Val, 5h 24min 33sec f Betty, oh 30 in in 3see 2 Eileen, oh 33min fiscc 3 VAUXHALL CLUB Racing in a gale, with a very heavy sea running, five of the Vauxhall Model Yacht Club's A class models put up a fine performance on the harbour on Saturday afternoon. The wind was from the north-east and the course From Hogg’s waterfront to "Waverley. The start was hampered somewhat by the sea breaking in on the foreshore ; nevertheless. most of the boats made a good start. Restless, Siloam, and Onaway sailed in close company for about onethird of the course, but after covering half the course Onaway and Restless had worked out into the lead. Maionn was to windward of the fleet, hut slightly astern of the two leaders, with Helen and Siloam to leeward. A great finish was witnessed, Onaway and Restless crossing the line together. Considering the force of the wind and the big sea, it was remarkable that all the boats finished without damage. Results : W. G. lles’s Onaway and A. Mitchell's Restless (equal) 1 E. Newall’s Helen 3 Maiona and Siloam also started. HORTH-EAST HARBOUR CLUB The Xorth-east Harbour Boating Club conducted its first series of club races
on Saturday afternoon. Both races were from Victoria wharf to Raynbirds buoy and back to the club shed. The wind was strong from the northeast at the starting line, and this nc doubt accounted for the non-appear-ance of a number of the smaller craft. Only two starters presented themselves for the all-comers’ yacht race for the ■Fulton Shield. One of them, Tucana, went aground on a sandbank off Cballis’s, leaving Dawn to finish alone. The power boat event was won by a comfortable margin by Nell, with a Tmin time allowance from Marewa (scr).
The results of the racing were:— Yachts (Fulton Shield) : Dawn (scr) Ih 25min, 1. Tucana withdrew. Allcomers’ motor boats; Neil (2min), 44min 44sec 1; Marewa (scr). 48rain, 2; Jewel (6min), 53min 33sec, 3.
