SEARCH FDR KIHGSFORD SMITH FLARES SEEN OH ISLAND Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SINGAPORE, November 22. A wireless message has been received by the captain of the Penang Harbour Board from the captain of the steamer Pasha stating that at 8.20 p.m. yesterday he saw lares on Sayer Island, on the west coast of Siam, but was unable to reach the island owing to a strong off-shore wind. A Qantas aeroplane is proceeding to Saver Island to search. There is a, lender chance that it may he Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. NO SIGN SYDNEY, November 22. The Minister for Defence (Mr R. A. Parkhili) announced that he had received advice from Air-commodore Sidney Smith at Singapore that a Qantas mail plane had this afternoon searched Sayer Island in the vicinity of where the flares were seen by the captain of the steamer- Pasha, with negative results. Mr Parkhili added that the headmen of tribes in Malaya had done, everything possible to locate the missing airmen. THE GANNET RETURNS SYDNEY, November 22. The Gannet monoplane, piloted by Harry Purvis, returned to Sydney today. Both Purvis and Stannage were greatly fatigued after the long flight from- Cloncurry and went to bed immediately they arrived " at Mascot aerodrome. . 1 -
