MR DOWNIE STEWART’S CANDIDATURE.
TO THE EDITOiI. Sir, —Your correspondent, “ Dunedin West Catholic ” (if he is such) has let himself in for something with his lastminute apology for Mr Stewart. _ I agree that Mr Stewart ' broke with Cabinet over the exchange question, but what I want to know is where did the martyrdom or personal sacrifice come in so far as Mr Stewart was concerned? It seems obvious that for long enough he had been party to the wicked actions of a Government that had betrayed the people and that it was time to take some action to save himself from being completely extinguished politically. A wealthy man like ’Mr Downio Stewart could well afford to sacrifice the plums of so than could the old-age pensioners and the unfortunate widow, to both of whom he applied the pruning knife. 1 would also like to ask your correspondent whether it was purely a coincidence that one of Air Stewart’s most prominent committeemen was appointed as a director to the Reserve Bank. I wonder also whether Air Stewart or his champion, “ Dunedin West Catholic,” could throw a little light on what action Air Stewart took as Finnnco Alinistcr to prevent the now celebrated Native Affairs scandal, one of the gravest pieces of corruption that could stain even the escutcheon of Chicago.—l am, etc..
