' , NEW MELBOURNE PILOT. ’ Captain Ernest Anton Stein, master • of the Union Company’s steamer Kini, has secured the much-coveted appointment as a Melbourne • pilot. , At » special meeting of the Marine Board at Melbourne last week Captain Stein was chosen from seven applicants to fill a vacancy in the Port Philip - sea pilots’ service at a salary of £1,12-5 a year. ”■■■ Captain Stein was born in 1891, and ‘ shipped - aboard the timber barqno James Craig at the age of 14 years as a cabin boy. . The barque traded between Australia and New Zealand, and young Stein rose to the position of second mate of the ship. Since 1913 ho has been in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company, and after war service as chief officer in the transports Willochra and Tofua, he was appointed chief mate of the Union Company’s training barque Hartford.’ The - ships ho .has-commanded include the Koramn, Kakaviki. Omana, Kowhni, Xgatoro, and Ivini. - '

Parera went into dock at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon' fipr .cleaning and paintin';. She was floated out this morning, and came to Dunedin to load. The vessel is to sail to-night for Wellington, New, Plymouth, and Port Waikato, via ports. Karu was scheduled to sail this afternoon for Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth, via ports. Wainui is due to-morrow or early on Monday morning from Wellington, and is to sail on Tuesday for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, via, ports. Waimarino left Auckland on Friday for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. She is due on Wednesday. Waipiata is to leave Auckland on Friday next for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. She is due on December 4. Port Whaugarci left Auckland on Friday for Lyttelton, Wellington, aiid Dunedin. She is due on Wednesday, and is to sail the same day for Tauranga, Auckland, and Port Whangarei, via ports. Holmdale is due from Wellington on Monday. She is to sail the same day for Wellington, Pieton, and Wanganui, via ports. Breeze is due from the north on Monday morning, and is to sail in the afternoon for Wellington, Pieton, and Wanganui, via ports. ROTORUA FROM LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s Rotorua berthed at Port Chalmers this morning to put out a large consignment of London cargo, and to commence Homeward loading. The liner experienced a good passage from London via Panama, Suva, Wellington, and Lyttelton. She is to leave here next Wednesday to put out the balance of general cargo at Bluff. KARETD’S DEPARTURE. The Karetu was expected to sail this afternoon for Lyttelton and Wellington to complete discharge of her Australian cargo. She will thence proceed to Newcastle and Sydney to load for Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru, and Lyttelton. HUNTINGDON CLEARS BALBOA. The Federal Company has received cabled advice that the Huntingdon, on route from Liverpool to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and Bluff, cleared Balboa on November 16.
