NEW UNDERSTANDING
FRANCE AND GERMANY FIRST MOVE MADE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, November 21. The ‘ News-Chronicle’s ’ Berlin correspondent says; “As the first move m a new understanding between France and Germany, Herr Hitler had a two hours’ conference with M. Francois Poncet, the French Ambassador, in the presence of Baron, Von Neurath, after which a communique announced that the conversation was of the most friendly character, and afforded an opportunity of establishing goodwill between both Governments. It is understood that M. Poncet yesterday received M. Laval’s instructions to make a wholehearted effort to remove the tension between France and Germany, at which British diplomacy is also aimed. It is believed that he and Herr Hitler discussed the possibility of checking the armaments race. M. Laval, in order to ple,ase Germany, delayed ratification of the Franco-Russian Treaty, which M. Herriot concluded, and also moderated his attitude to Italy. Owing to Germany being a non-member of the League, it is expected that Herr Ribbentrop will now visit M. Laval.’
