' The 'sum of £5,800,000 has been allocated by the City of New York for the expenses of the cleansing department during the present financial year. This means that the cost of scavenging the streets and carting the refuse is £IO,OOO a day, or £666 an hour b th day and night. The cleansing department has a permanent staff of 12,000 men.
