THE BRITISH EMPIRE
ENVY OF LAND-HUNGRY NATIONS BISHOP OF LONDON'S WARNING Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, November 21. (Received November 22, at 10.10 a.m.) “ AVhen yon see land-hungry nations like Italy and Japan grasping what they can and seeking a place in the sun you realise what a terrible temptation the British Empire is to the world,” said the Bishop of London at the Church Assembly. He instanced Australia’s “ Six and a-half millions scattered like flies round tho circumference of a saucer,” and alluded to New Zealand. Canada, and South Africa, and added: “When I was in Sydney the Governor of New South Wales, who was "an Admiral,, told me that if the Japanese had been against us in the war time they could have taken Sydney and Melbourne in five minutes.”
The Bishop commended the work of the Empire Settlement Council, and said if the Empire was to be saved it must be peopled with loyal British citizens from end to end.
