POISONED BAKING SODA
SENSATION IN SAH FRANCISCO WIDESPREAD PLOT SUSPECTED Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright SAN FRANCISCO, November 20. Facing the grave possibility of a . wide-spread poison plot designed to take the lives of many citizens, the city authorities to-day began an inyestigation to determine how baking soda sold over the bargain counter of a large local department store had come to kill at least three persons and made hundreds of others ill. The first theories advanced by investigators were that the soda had been packed in barrels .containing deadly insecticides, but later study showed that • more than one poison was present in the contaminated ■ soda,, and that these poisons were too thoroughly mixed in to be accidental. An inquiry has also been begun into the sudden deaths of 30 persons from stomachic disturbances since October 23, when, this bulk soda was first put on sale, since in three known cases of death soda was always taken for indigestion. Two distributors of soda .have 'been arrested, - and have been made to warn all purchasers of the danger by means of wide broadcasts over the radio.
