T December 30 to 4.—New Zealand championships, at Wellington. January 1,2, and 3.—South Canterbury championship and nanuicap tournament, at Timaru. January 16 to 18.—Waitaki Subassociation’s tournament.

Easter Dates. Auckland Association’s tournament. Wellington Association’s tournament. Otago and South Island championship and handicap tournament at Logan Park, Dunedin. Interclub Matches.

In the only A grade match played on Saturday North-cast Valley gained a good victory over University.' G. Jolly continued to show form, and allowed Macallan only three games. The strong wind which was blowing affected Valentine more than his opponent, Webber, who played steadily throughout, and made fewer , errors than the Valley man. W. Smith gave a good display against Facer, who was frequently found out of position _ by Smith’s good placements. Hislop showed improved form to defeat Gray, 6-1, in the third set. Both doubles were won by North-east Valley, and each of these matches went to the full three set; so that in the final tally there was not much between either team. Another round of the intermediate grade matches was played last Saturday, and with four rounds played only two teams, Balniacewen and Moana, remain undefeated. Caversham suffered its first defeat for the season when it went down to the strong Moana team. For Moana Chisholm won all his matches, while Black was the only Caversham member to win all his matches.. The Moana ladies made a clean sweep in the singles, but lost both their doubles. A good match was seen between Miss Logan and Miss D., Grigg. the former just (winning out on the . odd game. The following tables give the position of the teams in A grade men s and intermediate grade competitions: — —A Grade (Men).—

Ground Members. A move is being made by the Otago Association to enrol ground members of the association. A ground member will be entitled to stand accommodation at all fixtures milder the jurisdiction of the association. It is felt that there are many tennis enthusiasts who •would be willing to enrol under these conditions, and an active canvass will ibe shortly commenced. The hope is entertained that several hundred members will be secured at one guinea for a double ticket, so that should this objective be attained the finances of the association will benefit to a very material extent.

One of the chief desires of the committee is that the jubilee year of the game in Otago should 'be marked by the formulation of some plan which will lead to the provision of increased court accommodation for match play, so that the present pressure on club courts on Saturdays will be relieved. If the scheme for the enrolment of ground members is successful the association will be able to embark on the laying dowp of further courts. Australian Player’s Visit.

That Vivian M'Grath is likely to •visit Dunedin is good news. The Otago Association has been offered a match on December 26. For the past two years M'Grath has been a member of the Australian Davis Cup team, and this youthful Australian exploitation of the two-handed backhand has aroused much interest wherever' he has ■played,, and his appearance in Dunedin shbuld prove very popular. The Otago Association is also endeavouring to obtain a visit from Donohoe, accompanied by Sproule or some other leading Australian _ player. The suggestion for a visit this season was first made by Mr L. F. Cleghoru, who discussed the matter with Donohoe while he was in Australia recently. It has been suggested that possibly the tour could be arranged so that the Australian might play exhibition matches in Dunedin on the Saturday before Easter, and after mid-week matches in Oamaru or Invercargill, return to Dunedin to take part in Otago’s jubilee tournament.

Women’s Team in Australia. The New Zealand women’s team made a good impression in the New South Wales championships, which were completed last Saturday. Mias Miller, the present Otago champion, was defeated by Mrs Hopman, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round.. Mrs Hopman will be remembered when, as Miss N. Hall, she played' in the Australian ladies’ team at Logan Park three years ago. Mrs Hopman reached the semi-final, where she was only defeated 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 by Miss Coyne, the ultimate winner of this title. This will give some indication of how well Miss _ Miller played. Miss Nicholls also did well and reached the semi-final, in which she was defeated by Miss Joan Hartigan in straight sets.

M’Millan Cup Tournament. A reminder is given that entries close at 9 a.m. on Monday for the M'Millan Cup jubilee tournament. Large entries, with keen/competition, are indicated, and the tournament promises to be an outstanding success. jThe association has decided that, where

necessary, pairs shall be graded according to the judgment of the committee. An added inducement to junior players to enter is contained in the fact that balls will be provided free of cost. Each pair should have at least three sets.
