NEW MARKETS

TRADE WITH EASTERN COUNTRIES IMPROVED SHIPPING FACILITIES ESSENTIAL [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 22. In a letter to the Farmers’ Union, the Hon. R. Masters, after saying that the Government fully recognises the importance of new markets, and pointing out that trade tourist commissioners have been appointed in Europe and on the Pacific coast of America, proceeds: The union is doubtless aware that the Government has endeavoured to increase trade with Eastern countries, and in this direction has concentrated its attention on effecting an improvement to shipping facilities in that part of the world, as this is considered to lie an essential preliminary step in so far as our trade with Eastern countries is concerned. For some time past he had been in touch with representatives of shipping companies with a view to improving shipping facilities, and following discussions he had had with these representatives, an announcement was recently made by the Osaka Line that it intends to establish a regular direct service about the middle of next year, and there was a possibility that it would be extended to include Dutch East Indies and Singapore, besides China and Hongkong. He expresses the hope that New Zealand business houses will take full advantage of the service when established.
