The Nelson Softgoods and Boot Rfc tailers’ Assofiation to-day passed a resolution strongly protesting against the compulsory closing of shops on tba afternoon of Election Day. Shopkeepers feel that, allowance of time off t<» vote would be adequate provision fop the staff. A drastic resolution to defy the law and keep open was seriously considered, but better counsels prevailed. It was decided to make strong representations to the Government along the lines of the suggested amendment to the Electoral Act brought forward by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and the New Zealand Drapers’ Federation.
