CLUB ROWING
OTAGO'S WALTER FOURS An interesting series of races was provided by the Otago Rowing Club’s Walter Fours, which were decided on Monday and Tuesday night. The heats were rowed on the Waverley course in a light north-easterly wind, and the final on the .Anderson’s Bay course in a strong southerly. Shortly after the start' of tlie first heat, Barclay (stroke), M. Johnson, Grant, and Buxton took the lead, but from the quarter to three-quarter mile marks they rowed on level terms. Finch (stroke), C. Johnson, Petrie, and Cruickshank then assumed the lead and won by a length. Both crews showed good form. From a good start in the second event Brown (stroke), Davidson, Pouiter, and Burns gained a length’s lead, which was maintained for some distance. Lowrie (stroke), Henry, Williams, and Spalding quickened over the second half-mile, and finished with one and a-half lengths’ lead over their opponents. Lowrie’s crew, however, showed signs of distress toward the finish. A third crew—Caradus (stroke), Jack, White, and Skene — contested the final against Lowrie’s and Finch’s combinations. Lowrie was first off the mark, followed by Finch and Qaradus. The latter drew up to the other crews which were rowing together after half a mile, and for, the next quarter all criSvs were well in the race, but towards the finish Caradus assumed the lead from Finch, Lowrie’s crew dropping back. At the last quarter Finch’s crew showed a great burst of speed and was overhauling the leaders, who, however, showed good judgment and were able to hold off their challenge to win by half a length. Mr W. L. Zaffer acted as starter, and the coxswains for the race were C. Stapp, P. Williams, and M. White. REGATTA CREWS.
