WAITAKI BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

ANNUAL SPORTS H. W. GOWLAND WINS SENIOR GUP Weather conditions, although pleasantly fine, were not 'suitable for athletic sports yesterday, a strong north-easterly gale making things very unpleasant for competitors and spectators alike; consequently there was only a fair attendance of the public at the fifty-second annual sports of the Waitaki Boys’ High School. The function was held on Milner Park, the new ground recently handed over to the school by the rector (Mr F. Milner), and the track was in splendid order. Owing to the strong accompanying wind there were no records allowed in the running events, although several times were bettered. The existing record for the junior long jump, established by O. C. Cook in 1924, was broken, however, by D. W. Armitage, who made the excellent jump of 18ft 2iin, thus breaking Cook’s record jump of 17ft llin. The Senior Cup went to H. W. Gowland with 16 points, P. A. Bay being second with 13 points. Both these competitors gave excellent performances throughout the afternoon. In the junior championship turn competitors shared the honours —D. WArmitage and E. W. Thompson—with 24 points each. The issue was in doubt until the final race, when Thompson annexed the- hurdles event to equalise the points. , The long distance championship for the Duncan Sutherland Cup went to P. A. Bay with 15 points. This athlete was an easy winner in this section, the second-placed youth being S. J. Osborne with 6 points. A surprise was caused by the defeat of D. F. Wilson in the sprints championship events. This runner displayed very poor form, and was easily beaten by H. W. Gowland, who annexed the Sutton Cup donated for this event fairly easily. H. E. Wilson ran well to secure second place. At the conclusion of the sports the various trophies were presented to their respective winners by Mrs W. Kinder, who was the recipient of a posy of roses from one of the younger boys of the school. Results; —
