OTAGO CENTRE’S MEETING HIGH SCHOOL BOY WINS SPRINT The Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association held, its first evening meeting of the season at the Caledonian Ground last night, and despite a strong wind blowing from the Bay some good racing was witnessed. A feature of the evening was the success of the Boys’ High School junior (under 15) champion, C. M'Gregor, who from the 7yds mark won the 100yds handicap in 10 3-ssec, a good performance against the wind. W. Donovan (Anglican), who is a cousin of W. A. C. Pullar, the New Zealand representative runner, won the half-mile handicap handily in 2min 2 3-ssec. It was unfortunate that the Boys’ High School team should have committed a slight breach in the change-over in the 880yds handicap relay, for it won easily, but was disqualified. Civil Service was ' also disqualified, the event going to Anglican No. 3, which finished third actually. K. O. Johnson won the long jump and was second in the shot putt, won by P. Souter, the Alhambra Rugby player. The meeting was put through with despatch, thanks to the efforts of the centre president (Air Guy Tapley) and sports secretary (Air K. Aliller). Air 11. Thompson was the starter. Results:— 100 YARDS HANDICAP. First Heat.— H. D. Ramsay (Anglican),. 2yds, 1; H. A. Brown (St. Hilda), 4-iyds, 2; L. Wilson (Civil Service), 9yds, 3. Five starters. Ramsay shot to the front 60yds from the tape and won by 3yds, a yard between second and third. Time, 10 3-ssec. Second Heat.—T. Allen (Anglican) 6}yds 1, S. Longworth (Civil Service) sJyds 2, A. Lordcn (Caversbam) 6yds 3 Six starters. Won by half a yard, a yard between second and third. Time, 11 l-ssec. Third Heat.—C. M'Gregor (Otago Boys’ High School) 7yds 1, M. Murray (Anglican) 7yds 2, T. M. Kennedy (Alornington) 6yds 3. Five starters. Won by inches, a foot between second and third. Time. 10 3-ssec. —Final.— C. M'Gregor (7vds) 1 T. Allen (6-Jyds) 2 AI. Alurray (7yds) 3 M'Gregor had the race in hand at halfway, and finishing strongly won by two yards, inches between second and third. Time, 10 3-ssec. 880 YARDS HANDICAP. W. Donovan (Anglican) 55yds ... 1 G. Davie (Anglican) 45yds) 2 C. A. Broad (Civil Service) 35yds ... 3 There were 19 starters. This was a fast race, in which Donovan always occupied a handy position. The second time ;ound he started to move up on the leaders going along the back straight, and striding out well, ran to the front 200yds from home. Davie made a bid along -the straight, but was unable to make an impression on Donovan, _ who won by three yards, . Broad being two yards back third. Time, 2min 2 3-ssee..
HALF-MILE RELAY HANDICAP (4 by 220yds). Anglican No. 3 (G. Morgan, C. Lorden, P. Souter, and W. Donovan) 35yds 1 Anglican No. 1 scr 2 Six starters. Otago Boys’ High School (25yds), comprising C. M'Gregor, I. M. Chandler, A. R. Duff, and C. Irvine, won easily from Civil Service, but both these teams were disqualified for going beyond the 10yd mark in the change-over. LONG JUMP HANDICAP. R. 0. Holt, who neared 31ft, being run fairly close fey J, Anderson. One or two of the competitors in this event had been practising during the off season, so had maintained their usual form.
