STUDENTS’ PEACE BALLOT

RESULTS FROM TWO COLLEGES ANNOUNCED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 21. The ballot conducted by the New Zealand University Students’ Association on the subject of the attitude of the New Zealand student' to the problems of peace and war has been completed, and an analysis of the results is being made under the supervision of Dr J. T. Campbell, lecturer on mathematics at Victoria University College, The results obtained at Victoria College, where some 73 per cent, of the students recorded their votes, and at Massey Agricultural College, where almost 100 per cent, of students Voted, are released by Mr M'Ghie, secretary of the New Zealand University Students’ Association. “This is merely a, progress report, and it is hoped that the complete results for all the five University Colleges in the Dominion will be available within the nest fortnight,” said Mr M'Ghie. “ The association has been very glad to find that its attempt to clarify the situation as regards opinion on the matter has been very conscientiously dealt with by the students. This is shown by the many thoughtful comments on the questions and the representative nature of the vote.” An analysis of the Victoria College results shows that 22.1 per cent, of the voters believe that the overthrow of capitalism offers hope of permanent peace, and’that 65.4 per cent, do not. A percentage of 73.6 stated that development of the League of Nations offers that hope; and 17.4 per cent, thought not. .On the question that general acceptance of Christianity, as exemplified, for example, in the Sermon of the Mount, offers hope of permanent peace, 65.8 per cent, returned an affirmative answer, and 22 per' cent, a negative answer.
