MONTHLY MEETING CONCLUDED The Otago Education Board concluded its monthly meeting to-day, Mr' James Wallace presiding over a lull attendance. APPOINTMENTS AND TRANSFERS. Appointments confirmed were; Rosalie M. Trotter, sole teacher, Makarora; Robert J. Holden, sole teacher, Waihemo; Rita E. Loo, assistant. Pukcuri; Eileen Baxter, assistant, Teaneraki; Kathleen M. Moore, assistant, Wait.ati. Transfers were approved as follow: James M'Rac, head master, Palmerston D.H. (from Tapanui); Arthur C. Robinson, head teacher, Windsor (from Lowburn Ferry); George A. Spears, solo teacher, Allaiitoii (from Henley) ; George K. Dewar, sole teacher, Lowburn Ferry (from Ratanui) ; Gavine Campbell, sole teacher, Otokia (from Hindon Railway) ; James S. The department has intimated a grant of £lO towards concreting work at Bloa Flat, and the board decided to give £4 to make half the cost. The Wakari Committee advised that it was now in a position to find halfcost of top-dressing work. The architect stated that ordinary tar and sand would cost £4O, and he had received a quotation from New Zealand Highway Constructors Ltd. of amounts £7l ss, £135, and £l9B for bitumen seah'rig. The Musselburgh Committee also applied for assistance in top-dressing asphalt, and the architect estimated the cost in tar and sand at £195. Quotations from Highway Constructors Ltd, were of £292, £552, and £Bll for bitumen sealing.—lt was decided to forward the information to the committees. Half cost was granted Sandymount and Momona for top-dressing, the respective estimates being £26 and £l2. The Outram Committee applied for a strip of concrete (estimated cost £27 10s) and a bicycle shed to accommodate 12 cycles (estimated cost £ls). The committee is to be asked to make an offer towards the cost. The Sawyer’s Bay Committee applied for additional lights in the school. There were points at present in two rooms, and it asked for a further point in another classroom and the corridor, the estimated cost being £3 10s.—Referred back to committee. The Berwick Committee was given a half cost subsidy to replace a thorn hedge with a fence. REPAIRS AND RENOVATIONS. The Waikouaiti headmaster applied for improvements at residence. The architect reported that to erect a new lavatory would cost, with drainage, £3B. To place a shelter over Hie present. hack door, would cost £5, or, alternatively, to form a scullery out of a small back bedroom £l6. Other repairs were estimated at £2.—lt was decided to erect a lavatory and'to form a new scullery. The renewed application by the Kycburn head teacher for/ a sun porch (estimated to cost £34) was declined. Renovation of the dining room at the Romahapa residence was approved. EBIPLOYBIENT OF TEACHERS. The department- submitted the scheme which had been approved for the employment of probationary assistants, additional assistants, .and relieving teachers at scale rates next year. SWIBIBIING IN DUNEDIN SCHOOLS. The City Council intimated that it would again accept a fee of £SO. It was suggested that this be provided by the usual levy of Jd per lesson for each child, arid a request to the State Primary Schools’ Sports Association for a contribution of £ls, leaving £ls for the hoard to find. * The board decided to vote £ls. BASKETBALL COURTS. The Dunedin' North Intermediate Committee wrote that it would like an additional area of concrete to make it possible to provide three basketball courts. The- committee desired to know whether extra assistance would he forthcoming from the board or the department, hut in any case it asked the hoard to proceed with the work and allow, the committee two or three vears in which to raise the money, the committee offering to pay the interest on the accommodation. The Chairman pointed out that the hoard could not lend money on terms for work on playgrounds. The Secretary suggested that an advance could he made from the general fund. ~ , , . Mr Wallace: That would be a bad thing to start. It was decided to recommend the application to the department for favourable consideration. GENERAL. The Waikoikoi School Committee forwarded a letter from the Olntha County Council asking it to take steps to have the willows obstructing the portion of the Koi creek running through the school property hauled and cleared awav at an early date.- lu-rtlier information regarding the cost, etc., is to he obtained from the committee. The board decided to accede to the request of the Pnrakanui Committee thati the trees round the school residence be topped, the estimated cost being about £5. . The, department wrote approving or an additional grant to allow of the extension of the Clifton-Waiwera conveyance service. TENDKBS ACCEPTED. Rae’s Junction school property, C. J. Doeherty (£80); old -school, Waikou aiti, F. G. Asher (£55). HEALTH OABIP CABIPAIGN. The department submitted a plan suggested by the Sunlight League of New Zealand to further the health camp campaign, and the board decided to forward it to the head masters,_ with a scheme to assist the children of poor parents.
