DIETRICH IN STORMY LOVE DRAMA

PRINCIPAL OF ‘ CARNIVAL IN SPAIN • Hollywood’s famous director-actor combination, Josef Von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich, has again produced a colourful and dramatic love story in Paramount’s ‘ Carnival in Spain,’ which will be the first of the two attractions for the Octagon to-morrow. Into this picture Josef Von Sternberg has thrown all the vigour, creative imagination, and capability of his direction, and he has produced a film which will be the parallel of any seen in this city. Miss Dietrich acts the role of a heartless woman. The action of ‘ Carnival in Spain ’ takes place at carnival time in a Spanish village. Two friends come into open conflict over the love of tho heartless siren. A twill, as the middleaged lover mined by his infatuation for Dietrich, attempts to save his young friend from her. She turns the friends against each, other. Tho story has a tragic and thrilling climax. ‘ His Double Life,’ which will be the other picture, is a vastly amusing comedy, in which Roland Young does the best work of his career. Another splendid portrayal is that by Lillian Gish. The narrative is an adaptation of Arnold Bennett’s ‘ Buried Alive,’ which was made into a play called ‘ Tho - Great .Adventure.’ The film is well cast, and Arthur Hopkins’s direction is just what tho strange story needed. It is .a, case of a famous hut very timid artist, whose valet dies and is buried in Westminster Abbey as tho artist, while the latter assumes the name of his late valet. It is filled with genuinely humorous situations, and there is not a weak moment in the whole production.
