CROMWELL NEWS

[J?KOM OUE CORRESPONDENT.] November 19. There has been something of a lull in the political world of Cromwell during the past week, duo to the fact that none of the three candidates has been in the immediate vicinity of the town, but from now on the excitement in the forthcoming election is likely to be increased, for on Wednesday evening Air H. K. .Edie, the Labour candidate, is to address the electors, and the present member, Air W. A. Bodkin, ALP., is holding a meeting on the Thursday evening; Labour would appear to be making a determined effort to secure the votes of the Cromwellians, for the party has booked the hall for the Alonday evening preceding the election, when it is understood a prominent member of the party will speak. Mr APNaught, the Democrat candidate, however, is to have tho last shot, and he will speak again at Cromwell on the eve of the election. THE WEATHEII. It is many years since such a wet November has been experienced, but, though a good deal of heavy rain fell during tho past week, tho rivers have not been affected to any great extent, and until this morning tho Kawarau was still at its winter level. Shearing has been in full swing on the smaller farms, and this work has been considerably hampered by tho frequent 'rain showers. Gardeners and orchardists, too, are alarmed at > tho excessive amount of moisture and the snaps of cold weather, which aro seriously retarding the growth of tomatoes and other tender garden truck which is planted out, the success of which largely depends on warm weather. Further heavy rain was experienced to-day, and ono redeeming feature is tho possibility, as a result of the rising river, that the .two big dredges at Clyde and Alexandra respectively may now be able to be launched if the river keeps rising, as tho present indication suggest it may. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. The local Caledonian Society has decided virtually to disband; at least as a result of a poorly attended meeting, it was decided not to proceed further with the annual shorts meeting. this year. Interest in'tho society does not appear to be as keen as it was in its earlier stages. PERSONAL. Air Robert Smart, of Cromwell, who for a number of years has been the representative of Big Tree products, has received notice of his transfer to Otautau. He leaves with his wife and family shortly for his new centre, and there are many bodies which will miss Air Smart and his family, members of which have been actively associated with the Presbyterian Church, the Alunicipal Band, the Croquet, Bowling, and Swimming Clubs, and the Girl Guides.

Mr T. M. Ellis, of Hawera, the newly-appointed manager of tho National Bank at Cromwell, is expected to take up his new appointment on the 28th inst.

CROAIWELL JOCKEY CLUB,

Not for very many years has the Cromwell Jockey Club been able .to boast of such a healthy state of affairs as that revealed by the annual report and balance sheet to be presented to members at tho annual meeting of the club next Saturday evening. The club commenced the year with a deficit of over £IOO, and concluded with a bank credit of £223 19s 6d. The president, Air George Wishart, in his customary good-natured manner, attributes the success to everyone and everything else other than himself, despite the fact that his enthusiasm was a source of inspiration to many others. In his report Air Wishart states:—l must congratulate your club upon having one of the most successful meetings for many years past. The club commenced the season with very straightened finances, and indeed at one stage it was problematical whether it could carry on. Thanks, however, to a number of circumstances this old-established chib gained a new lease of life, and concluded tho meeting with a very handsome profit. The principal matters to which the success of the club was due were the very generous support accorded by owners and trainers, the Bannockburn Hall Committee,_ the whole-hearted support and enthusiasm of all officials and members, and the many fine donations and trophies presented by firms and private persons. To all these your club is deeply grateful, and extends its sincere thanks. To the officials and members of the Vincent Jockey Club your club owes a debt of gratitude for tho very fine sporting spirit shown in assisting this club in every way. Tho meeting was held in ideal weather, and a large ate tendance on both days witnessed most enjoyable racing. The standard of racing was excellent, all events being keenly contested and providing some close and exciting finishes. A feature of tho meeting was its excellent conduct, and all events were despatched prompt to time. A special word of appreciation and thanks is due to Air R. G. Varcoe for the promoting and unqualified success of an art union which considerably augmented the club’s funds. In conclusion I wish to extend to all officials and members and all who assisted to make the meeting a success my sincere thanks and appreciation for their support, and I trust that tho splendid team work may still continue and assist in ensuring the permanent prosperity of the club.”
