COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The council of the University of Otago held its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon, there being present: The Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), Sir Lindo Ferguson, Sir James Allen, Professor J. R. T. 8011, Bishop W. R. Fitchett, Messrs F. Mitchell, J. W. Dove, J. W. Howarth, J. Robertson, S. Rice, James Wallace, L. D. Ritchie, G. R. Ritchie, Dr F. C. Batchelor, and Rev. D. C. Herron. SCHOLASHJPS AWARDED. The recommendations of the Professorial Board for the award of scholarships and prizes, the list having been previously published, was adopted. Because the two other nominees had accepted other scholarships. Miss D. A. Doak was awarded the Beverley scholarship in mathematics T. Mr Wallace protested against the recommendations being published before they first came before the council. The registrar explained that the publication of the recommendations had been made for many years simultaneously with the release of the terms results. It was decided that in future the awards should first be made by the council before the Professorial Board’s report was published. On the recommendation of the Dean of the Dental Faculty. Messrs A. I l '. Marshall and K. N. M‘Namara were awarded Fowler scholarships. W.E.A. BURSAR. On the recommendation of the W.E.A., Mr J. C. Cunningham was appointed as the W.E.A. bursar for 1936 PROFESSORIAL BOARD. The Registrar reported the result of the ballot for representatives of the Lecturers’ Association on the Professorial Board. To represent the fulltime lecturers Drs Holloway and Focken were elected, Dr Holloway obtaining the greatest number of votes, and to represent the part-time lecturers Dr Galway was appointed. The appointments were made by the council. MUSICAL APPRECIATION. Dr Galway recommended that the lectures in musical appreciation should be made available to a wider public. He suggested that a course of public lectures in music be given at a fee of £1 10s, and that students taking the lectures for degree purposes pay the present fee of two and a-half guineas, but receive an extra period during the second and third terms. The council approved of the sugges tions. HOME SCIENCE APPOINTMENTS. The Dean of the Home Science Faculty forwarded an application from Miss "Helen Thomson, assistant in chemistry, for leave of absence during 1936. She recommended that two_fulltime temporary assistants be appointed to carry out Miss Thomson’s work and the work at present being performed by Misses Davies and Chambers at no extra cost, and that Dr Gregory be authorised to make the appointments. The recommendation was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The Dean of the Medical Faculty advised that Mr Moloney iind Mr Grieve had accepted positions in the physiology department next year, and they were appointed. Sir Lindo Ferguson also recommended that 100 steel lockers be erected in the new students’ room in the administrative block. The staff had voted £IOO towards the cost, and he asked the University to pay the balance.—The Works and Finance Committees are to act. The request of Dr Jack for the painting of the interior of his department (Turing the vacation was also referred to the same committees. The New Zealand Dental Association advised that it was offering a book prize of £5 os annually for the best essay on a dental subject by a finalyear student.—The offer was accepted, and the Dean of the Dental Faculty was asked to confer with the association. , . Mr H. D. Skinner, secretary of the Friends of the Museum, advised that Mr J. Begg and Mr J. M‘lndoe were reappointed representatives on the Committee of Management of the Museum, witli Mr A. C. Matheson acting representative in the absence of Mr Willi Fels. FINANCE AND MEDICAL. . The Finance and Medical Committees reported having considered the appointment of a lecturer in general surgery to dental students in place of Mr Jenkins. Since it was proposed to reorganise the surgical department early next year it was resolved that consideration of this matter be held over till February. They had considered a report from the dean of the Medical Faculty in reference to various accounts relating to the Aledical School referred to by the treasurer in his annual report. In accordance with the report, it was resolved that .portion of the accumulation of the cancer fund be invested to bring the capital up to £5,000; that £3OO of the accumulated balance of the Medical School special library account should be invested ; that the unused income of the Marjorie M'Callum fund be invested from tim.e to time. With regard to the Sir John Roberts account it was resolved that the matter should be referred to the Research Board to report as to how the accumulation should be utilised. Dr D’Ath wrote reporting regarding catgut prepared for the hospital. The amount payable by the Hospital Board was £SO 10s for a year’s supply, it was resolved to submit an account to the Hospital Board for the amount. Dr Dodds wrote stating that Miss West, theatre nurse, had resigned her position as from March 31 next. It was resolved to recommend that the resignation be accepted, and that the post be advertised. Dr Kerens wrote requesting that Miss Howorth’s annual leave be extended by five weeks to allow of her visiting Fiji. This request was agreed to subject to Miss Howorth arranging at her own expense for assistance satisfactory to Dr Kerens. The committees considered including ill us-
trations in the home science reprint of the calendar, and it was finally resolved to refer the matter to the chairman ol the Finance Committee, the chairman of the Home Science Committee, and the dean of the Home Science Faculty with power to act. The report was adopted. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported having considered a letter fom -Mr Cartel suggesting that he should be paid £2O a month as from September 1 for additional work undertaken pending the appointment of a new professor, and that Mr M. V. B. King he appointed as additional assistant at £2O a month as from March 1 until the new professoi takes up his duties, and that Mr King be granted leave from the tenure of the Smeaton scholarship during the period of his temporary assistantship. It was resolved to recommend the council to adopt the recommendations. A lettci was received from the Under-Secretary of Mines advising that the subsidy to the School of Mines would be increased by 74 per cent, as from August 1 last. WORKS REPORT. The report of the Works Committee, which was adopted, stated that a letter was received from ; the town clerk stating that the City Council was unable to contribute towards the protection work of the Leith bank in front of the University. It was resolved to recommend the council to ask the City Council if it will remove part of the weir which is causing erosion to the bank. Letters were received from the Dean of the Home Science Faculty drawing attention to certain renovations required in the Home Science building and Stndholme House. These were referred to the architects for report. The attention of the committee was drawn to the condition of the stairway in the Arts building, and the architects were instructed to report on this, matter to the next meeting. The Dean of the Medical Faculty’ requested that an electric clock bo installed in the students’ common room, and it was recommended that the request be agreed to. The committee considered what action should be taken in view of the.fact that the roofs of the main arts building, the chemistry and geology block, the administration building", and the professors’ houses required renewal. it was resolved to request the Budget Committee to make a grant of £I,OOO per annum for live years for this work. HOCKEN LIBRARY. The Hockeu Library Committee reported having considered the appointment of a successor to Mrs Macdonald, and to recommend the council to advertise the position at £IOO per annum for part-time duties, it being suggested that the library should be kept open on the mornings of Wednesday and Saturday from 9.30 to 12.30, and during each afternoon except Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the portion of the year when the Museum is closed at 4 p.m., and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the portion of the year when the Museum closes at 5 p.m. The committee expressed the view that it was advisable, if practicable, that the library should be carried on under the general supervision of the University librarian as the other departmental libraries are.
Dr Basil Howard, it was recommended, should be added to the Books Sub-committee. It was resolved to grant Mr Skinner 10 months’ leave of absence, and to express to him the committee’s best wishes for a useful and pleasant study leave. * The Chancellor said he saw no objection to the library being under the general supervision of the University librarian. The report was adopted.
