TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCIL

ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING The above-named body met: at Lawrence last Friday afternoon. All the members were in attendance with the exception of Crs Bennetts and Simpson. Cr Cameron occupied the chair. The county clerk (Mr Batchelor) reported that the receipts for August amounted to £2,044 13s 5d and the accounts for payment to £2,315 18s lid, while there was a debit balance at the bank of . £ll 6s.—Received. Ranger Cowie reported that since last council meeting he had found 20 head of cattle wandering on county roads.—Received. The county engineer (Mr F. D. Grant) reported that plans and specifications had been prepared for Cave Creek bridge, and likewise for the renewal in reinforced concrete of the Ettrick bridge. An engineering survey had been made of the reconstruction repairs to Conical Hills highway bridge and plans commenced. The average number of relief workers working per week under the council’s committee’s control during the past month was 186, of whom 137 were prospecting for gold; the wages’ claim for August amounting to £1,414 13s 9d. Maintenance road repairs as well as _ grader and surface repairs were carried out in all the ridings during the past month .—Received. The chairman (Cr Cameron) reported that he and the clerk (Mr Batchelor) had attended the conference of county council delegates held recently in Wellington, and he outlined the business dealt with thereat. . ■ Among the letters dealt with m the inward correspondence were the following:—The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce and the Otago; Automobile Association drew attention' to the danger of accidents to motorists through cattle wandering on roads at night. Cr Revie remarked that some action should bo taken in this matter, but as their by-laws were not up ■to date they could only ask their ranger to do his best to stamp out the nuisance.—Letter received. '

The secretary of tho New Zealand Counties’ Association requested tho council to pass the following resolution :—“ That the Government be asked to introduce legislation this session authorising payment of a £ for £ subsidy on roads other than highways instead of the present rate subsidy,” and to forward copies to the Prime Minister, Minister of' Finance, the Minister of Internal Affairs, and members of Parliament. —Agreed to. •Mr T. W. Farkhill, raining registrar at Lawrence, gave notice of three, applications by John W. Scurr (Dunedin) tor dredging claims on the Molyneus River, commencing at a point below the Miller’s Flat bridge and extending down stream towards the Beaumont bridge.—Consented to, conditionally that dredging be not carried on within 10 chains of the Miller’s bridge, and that unemployed relief miners be allowed to surface-work the area applied for to the water’s edge. Mr S. Fletcher, solicitor, forwarded copies of three applications by John Corbett (Dunedin) for deduction of rent payable on special dredging claims on the Molynoux River from below the Beaumont bridge down stream to Tuapoka Mouth. —It was resolved to recommend a reduction of £3 in rentals. Mr J. S. Stewart (Glenore) applied for a saw-mill site on the gravel 'reserve near the Waitahuna railway station.— It was agreed to recommend the Land Board to grant the application. The Commissioner of Transport forwarded an explanatory circular relative to the Heavy Motor Vehicle Regulations, 1932, and the apportionment of heavy traffic license fees. He pointed out that it was desirable that' the local bodies should, if possible, come to an amicable agreement as to the distribution of these fees; failing this the ! egulations provide that the fees shall he apportioned by the Minister of i i-ansport.—Received.
