CARGILL ROAD METHODIST. The five-mile club championship and sealed handicap of the Cargill Road Harriers was hold over a course at St. Hilda under ideal conditions. Starting at the Scout Hall, the course led up to the St. Clair Tennis Courts, and from there through to Lovers’ Lane. The course continued up Lovers’ Lane until the Cemetery gates were reached, and thus back to St. Hilda via Victoria road. The first half of the course was then covered again, the finishing point being at the back of the Battery. Promptly at 3 o’clock the starter (Mr A. T. Maclndoa) despatched the field of eight runners. From the start Lumb, MacGregor, and Clark took the lead, and at the St, Clair Tennis Courts the order was:—H.' Clark, D. Lumb, and MacGregor. At St. Hilda Lumb and MacGregor had displaced H. Clark, followed by S. Siddells and J. Guthrie. Coming back past the terminus MacGregor was s.till leading, with D. Lumb close up, and about 300yds back K. Clark, wlio had passed his brother. At this stage Lumb took the lead, crossing the finishing line about lOOydk ahead of MacGregor, with K. Clark about 300yds further back. Fastest times: D. Lumb 30min Msec, J. MacGregor 30min 45sec, K. Clark 32min SOsec. The sealed handicap run in conjunction with this race resulted in K. Clark being first. Time, 29min 20sec; J. Guthrie, 29min 22sec. DUNEDIN. The above dpi) held its three-mile cross-country race from the Kaikorai Baths. The field set off at a fast pace, and at the Roslyn tram terminus C. Turner was in the lead from H. Connell and F. Breese. The first time round found C. Turner in the lead, with F. Breese and H. Connell next. This order was unchanged at the finish. Result: C. Turner 1, E. Breese 2, H. Connell 3. The sealed handicap resulted:—F. Breese I, H. Connell 2. NORTHERN. The pleasant . overhead conditions materially helped to make Northern’s weekly run from the Mornington Methodist Church pleasant. Deputycaptain D. Fincham had charge of the pack, and was responsible for an excellent trail. From the church the trail was up to Elgin road, and then across country to the Kaikorai Valiey road; then up to the Southern Reservoir, where a relay race added variety. After circling round through the Pines, more open country was traversed, coming out above Miller Park at Green Island, thence across the Main South road and up past the Concord School. Tlie pack then headed .for _ home, journeying over Lookout Point to Kglinton road. The run home over the last 880yds resulted in a Win for R. M'Kinley, followed by W. Jefferson and D. Fincham. CIVIL SERVICE. Under the control of Deputy-captains P. G. Spenoe and S. T. Ross, 15 members, who are in training for the road races, ran from the North-cast Valley School and back. A steady pace was maintained on the . outward journey, and in the long run homo W. Mackinnon was first, followed by bis brother. M. Mackinnon, and N. Coutts The No. 2 pack, under the control of H. J, Tyrie, followed a course up Bethuue’s Gully. Leaving the road about 200yds below the Brown House, the pack ran across to the top of Signal Hill. From
the top of the hill a steady pace was maintained across the paddocks back to the school. In the run home I. Herbison was first, followed by T. Toner and E. Asher. CAVERSHAM. There was an attendance of 23 at the Caversham Harrier Club’s run from the Kaikorai Baths. The first pack, under the charge of L. R. Abernethy, had an enjoyable run of about six miles. Leaving the baths, the pack ran up the zig-zag to Helensbrugh road, and branched off across country to Halfway Bush and on to Brockvillo road, and then back home through Fraser’s Gully. There was no run in. The other pack, under S. Bartlett (deputy-captain), ran about _ seven miles on the roads in preparation for the coming road season. The trail led along Kaikorai Valley road to Bumside, and turned along the Main South road, Elgin road, English avenue, and Stone street. A run in was held from the Woollen Mills, along the Kaikorai Valley road and Fraser’s road, a distance of about half a mile;- G. L. Austin being first, J. R. Colston second, and 11. C. Knox third. The run next Saturday will be held from the _ Caversham School, the runners being the guests of the captain (Mr L. F, Gerrie) afterwards., ST. HILDA. The Past v. Present Members’ sports fixture at Hancock Park was held under ideal weather conditions, and a large number of past and present members participated. Prior to the commencement of the sports meeting a club photograph was taken by Mr A. Samuels. The president, Mr A. E. Rosevear, expressed his pleasure in seeing so' many old faces, and wished them every success in the field events, but was of the opinion that present members would be too good for them in the track events. The half-mile drew a large field, L. Johnstone and A. Carter leading the field after 440yds were covered, A. M'lntyre, however, going to the front when the straight was reached to win easily from L. Dickison and A. Carter. The high jump resulted as follows: —Woltersdorf 1, Ross and Sabiston 2 (equal). Broad Jump.—R. E. B. Johnstone (past member) and Woltersdorf 1 (equal), L. R. Johnstone 3. Shot Putt.—R. I. Dodds 1 (past member), G. Sabiston 2 (past member), Bob Watson 3 (past member). Among the past members who were present were the Rev, R. T. Dodds, the Rev. C. Brown, Messrs C. Brady, C. Eccles. S. Hitchcox, J. Dunn. R. Watson, R. Johnstone, C. Bissland, A, M'Donald, Auld, T. Thorburn. G. Sabiston, A. Smith, Len. Hitchcox. ANGLICAN. Anglican held their run from the Old Caversham School with an attendance of over 30 runners, under the whistle of Captain M'Lachlan. The trail lay up the Valley road to Lookout Point, thence across country into Kaikorai Valley, and ascending the hill towards the Southern Reservoir. The race was followed for about two miles, the trail then branching down a side road and again across country towards Abbotsford. From here a, fast pace was set to Burnside, thence up the short cut. From Look-out Point a fast run home was held, Curtis coming in first, after the most enjoyable run of the year, followed by Pullar and Gore, close together. Marett and Stark (a new member) were prominent throughout the run.
MORNINGTON. Twenty members of the Mornington Club turned out for the run from the Anderson’s Bay School. Doputy-cap-tain Burton led the pack along the top road at a steady pace for a good distancei when the trail led up to the Monument. On leaving this the pack again made for the road, which was then followed until the turn was made across country to the new wireless mast. From here the pack continued down towards the coast until the road was reached,, wljeu a small team, consisting of those training for the road races, set olf on their own. This pack followed the road down, to Smaill’s Beach and back through. Tomahawk, and so to the school.. Hifll was running very easily, and moved away over the last mile to reach home some 300yds ahead of Taylor, Webster, and Sanders. The other pack followed across country until they, reached the same road. In the run. home Munro was first, followed by Graveson and Maitland. PACIFIC. Pacific held its annual one and a-half-mile steeplechase for the Brown Cup at the Kaikorai Baths. The course started from the bath’s gate, followed down Fraser’s road to the tram .sheds, around on to Kaikorai Valley road as far as Ellis’s paddock, which was traversed towards Wellhamls property, where the creek was crossed above, the baths, finally emerging on Fraser’s road, then down to the finish at the gate. The starter (Mr Buskin) sent J. Hastie, the limit man, away, followed by the rest of the field at intervals, till J. M'Laren (the scratch .man) started 90s6c after. Young Hastie made good use of his handicap, but his brother, E. Hastie, caught up with him at the halfway mark, while the rest of the field was closing up. With half a mile to go E. Hastie was leading,, with P. JMathieson f and J.-Hastie close on his heels, F. Mouat, L. Hill, and J. Mann being further back. Mann left his comarkers to pass J. Hastie with a quar : ter of a mile to go, but E. Hastie held his lead to win by 4yds, while Mann beat Mathieson on the tape. Result: E. Hastie (60sec) 1, J. Mann (30sec) 2, P. Mathieson (40sec) 3, J. M'Laren (scr) 4, HANOVER BAPTISTS. The above club held its run from the South Dunedin Baptist Church, about 17 members turning out under the whistle of Captain H. Benfell. The pack ran down Bay View road and on to the Portobello road. This was followed for about five miles. Just before Macandrew Bay. was reached .the trail led up on to the top of the hill at the base ot the new radio construction. At this juncture A. Young was running strongly and a fast pace was maintained until about a mile from the Anderson Bay terminus. Here two packs were formed, and the slow set off and followed the road, around the base of the lagoon, along Musselburgh Rise, and down Bay View road, to finish in a bunch. The fast pack went a slightly different route, diverging from Musselburgh Rise to go into Ravelston street, along Bowen . street into Queen’s Drive, along Begg street, to finish in a bunch at the end of Bay View road. LEITH. Leith ran as guests of Mr and Mrs J. H. G. Clarke, of Malvern street, Woodhaugh. The run was held from the Holy Innocents ■ schoolroom, and weather conditions were excellent. A good muster of members assembled for |he run, which proved one of the most
enjoyable of the year. Captain Masters and Deputy-captains Thomson and Anderson controlled the pack, which was led for a short distance up the Leith Valley road and then across the Leith and up into the hilly country bordering the valley, The ideal rolling country encountered provided excellent going, and a fast pace was maintained. The trail led through bogs, ditches, and bush until the old survey road was reached, Along this the pack proceeded at a fast pace for about a mile, when another detour through rough ground led on to the main road just oelow Sullivan’s dam. After.a short rest at the dam a run round the track was held, the going being perfect and the run developing into more or less a race. Two packs were formed down the main road, the fast pack going ahead and holding a good solid run. The run home resulted in S.. King heading S, Pederson and R. Watson. The slow pack f followed more leisurely, A. Murray leading S. Avent and W. Thomson in a short race home. After the run the harriers were entertained at a tea. ST. PATRICK’S. Starting from the St. Patrick’s School, the first pack, under the whistle of Deputy-captain Greaney, ran over the foreshore heading for Waverley, where some excellent running was indulged in. The pack travelled as far as the hew 4YA station, and the home trail passed down to Smaill’s Beach, then along the Tomahawk road. The run home resulted in a win for Ck M‘Donnell, who was followed by T. : Ryan, and, a few yards back, _JV Woods. The second pack, under Captain Scott, ran as far as Macandrew Bay, and a very slow run home saw the pack well bunched.
