ROYAL MALE CHOIR

The Royal Male' Choir has been strengthening the ranks of the tenors, and, in this, its fiftieth season, it hopes to give programmes in its quarterly concerts that should be outstanding. Dr Galway has been commanding excellent attendances at rehearsals, and the part songs chosen are said to suit the choir. Two new songs are to bo presented at the choir’s concert in the Town Hall on July 22—an Irish folk tune, ‘ County Clare Song,’ a lovely melody for piano and voices, and a rousing sea song, ‘ The Arethusa.’ These are the gift of one of the vicepresidents, Dr W. Evans. Other choir contributions are ‘Hymn to Music,’ one of the most beautiful negro spirituals, ‘Deep River,’ in which Mr John Kennedy will take the solo, and a scene from ‘ The Miracle ’ (Humperdinck). Dr Galway will preside at the organ. Mr W. R. Sinclair will cos duct the choir, and a ladies’ choir will be under the baton of Mr A. Walmsley. In the second part Mr Edward Benton will be heard in Grieg’s ‘ Recognition of Land,’ a fine composition, and another part song, ‘ Captain Stratton’s Fancy, has a solo for Mr G. Stuart Thompson. This latter song is that of a rollicking pirate captain. .In contrast to this item are the dainty ‘ The Sandman,’ by West and Robertson, and ; All in the April Evening.’ Miss Betty Pocock is the lady soloist, Mr Victor Le Petit, of Invercargill, ’cellist, and the choir soloists are Mr R. A. Mitchell ftenor) and Mr J. D. M'Kechnie (hass).
