NEW HOME SECRETARY

SIR JOHN SIMON REVIEWS WORK MANY SUBJECTS DISCUSSED (British Official Wireless.) Pre»B Association —By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, July IC. (Received July 17, at noon.) In the House of Commons Sir John Simon touched upon a great variety of subjects in reviewing the work of the Home Office, the vote for which he

recalled having last presented in the House 20 years ago. He spoke encourageingly of the developments and methods of. dealing with juvenile crime embodied in recent legislation. The Act of 1933 strengthened the law for dealing with neglected children, and if the problem of neglect could be adequately dealt with the amount of juvenile delinquency would certainly be diminished. Referring to the re-organisation of the police force, Sir John paid a tribute to the work of Lord Trenchard as Chief Commissioner of Police. There were 180 separate police forces in England and Wales, and it was important to get close co-operation between these forces for many purposes. A great deal was being done to enlist science on thg side of crime fighting. The jubilee review of the police forces by the King next Sunday was a reminder to the British public of the reason it had to be proud of this great civil force, which won for the British policeman a reputation abroad as well as at home for coolness, courtesy, and good temper. Sir John Simon mentioned figures in the annual report of the Chief Inspector of Factories bearing on the extent of accidents among young persons, and said the solution -was to bo found in education in safety among boys and girls as a result of voluntary efforts undertaken with the goodwill of the employers, workers, and others.
