GIFTS TO CHARITY
APPLICATIONS TO TRANSPORT BOARD [Pbr United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 16. A considerable difference of opinion was revealed when the _ Auckland Transport Board to-day considered applications from charitable 'and other organisations for donations. _ Some members thought that all applications should be declined until the board ascertained its financial position. They suggested that the board was not paying its way. Otheiy members, including the former chairman, Mr J. A. C. Allum, disagreed that the position was doubtful.
A request from the Swimming Association was declined, and the board then considered one from the Boys’ Employment Committee. After discussing the aspects of boys’ employment, the board decided by six votes Ho four to give £lO. The next request, which was from the Crippled Children’s Society, had a more sympathetic reception. Mr J. Sayegh, who had previously opposed such donations, moved that the board make a donation of £25. Mr E. J, Phelan, another Labour member, said that every trading concern and every individual should put their hands in their pockets'for such a cause. The board also gave £lO to the Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society.
