METROPOLITAN BOARD'S MEETING Tho Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board met yesterday afternoon, there being present the chairman (Mr S. B. Macdonald), Messrs J. Wilson, H. A. B. Brabant, W. W. Callendar, E. H. Ferguson, J. L. Salmond, A. F. Quelch. M. Silverstone, and P. Neilson. It was reported that accounts amounting to £1,007 12s 5d had been passed for payment. Superintendent J. J. Salmon submitted the following report on the work of the brigade for the month of Juno;—
Calls attended were: Fires, 17; chimney fires, 15; rubbish and bush, 4; false alarms—malicious 6, justifiable 3. automatic 4, accidental 1; total of 50. A fire in an office in King Edward street caused damage _ amounting to £156. A fire in a shop in George street caused damage to the building, mostly by heat and smoke, amounting to £69; The stock suffered damage to the amount of £375. The stock of a garage at the rear of the shop was damaged to the extent of £32. The remaining 15 calls classed as fires occasioned very little damage. Of the chimney fires eight were attended from the central station, two from South Dunedin, four from lloslyn, and one from Green Island. Motor No. 15, of the central station, attended 27 calls, No. G, of South Dunedin,' 11, and No. 12, of lloslyn, 8. Properties on which firek occurred were:—Dwellings, C; office, 1; shops, 2; foundry, 1; telephone box, 1; flock factory, 1; railway shops, 1; fibrous plaster works, 1; boarding house, 1.; motor vehicles, 2; a total of 17. The causes of fires i were: Blow lamps, 2; ignition of petrol, 1 1; explosion of battery, 1; defect in j hearth 1; defect in chimney, 1; defect j in hot water circulator, 1; hot ashes, 2; spark, 1; overheating, 2; unknown, | 4; short circuit, 1; a total of 37. The staff is ,at full strength; ordinary routine work and inspections have been carried out. All plant is in good order. The Green Island Brigade answered two calls during the month, one to a chimney fire and one to a fire in a motor truck. The crew, attended monthly practice. No calls were received by the Mosgiel Brigade. Pressure at the central station has been:— 9 aim., 801 b; 9 p.m., 1301 b; at South Dunedin, 951 b ami 1201 b; at lloslyn, I.lolb and 1401 b. The ambulances travelled 1,203 miles, and transported 104 patients. The report was adopted.
