OBITUARY
MRS ELEANOR COATES Mother of the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Mrs Eleanor Kathleen Coates died at the old family .homestead at “ Ruatuna,” Matakohe, last Saturday morning. She was in her eighty-fourth year, A daughter of the late Dr Thomas Aickin, the late Mrs Coates arrived at Auckland from Ireland by the sailing ship Mermaid in 1859. Her father opened a.practice at Avondale and she was educated in Auckland. In 1877 she married Mr Edward Coates, who, with his brother, Mr T. Coates, had been among the pioneer settlers of the Kaipara district. Her eldest son, Gordon, was born in the following year. The late Mrs Coates spent the whole of her life after her marriage at; “ Ruatuna,” her love of the land making her remain there after the death of her husband (says the Auckland ‘Star’). Particularly during the latter part of her long life she showed a keen interest in politics, although life in the country prevented her from taking any part in public affairs herself. Right up till the time of her death, which followed a short illness, she was bright company' among the younger members of her family. Mrs Coates is survived by two sons, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and Mr Rodnev Coates, of Matakohe, and three daughters, Mrs Hugh Aickin, of Auckland, and Misses Ada and Dolly Coates, A third son, Captain W. M. Coates, was killed in France in 1917, and one daughter, Mrs Crisp, died some years ago.

MR HUGH LOWRY i [Pm United Press Association.] TIMARU, July 16. The ath occurred this morning of Mr '-agh Lowry, who for many years was a prominent and respected member of the business community. Mr Lowry, who was 65 years of age, commenced work in the agency, of Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd.. Timaru, in 1900. He later became auctioneer, and was appointed branch manager in 1924, retiring in 1931. In his younger days he was a prominent sportsman, and was no mean performer on the football field and cinder track; He represented Canterbury in amateur athletics and was keenly interested in racing. He was elected president of the South Canterbury Jockey Club in 1912, and held office for 19 years. He was also honorary judge for some years to the Timaru Trotting Club. He was a life member of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and held office as president in 1914. Mr Lowry suffered an illness in 1930, from which he only partially recovered. MRS MARTHA RUTHERFORD NEW PLYMOUTH, July 16 A The death of Mrs Martha Rutherford, mother of Lord Rutherford of Nelson, occurred this evening. Mrs Rutherford, who was 92 years of age, lived a£l her life in the Taranaki and Nelson provinces. She was predeceased by her husband, Mr James Rutherford. • MR R. 0. ELLIS A New Plymouth Press Association telegram records > the death of Mr Robert Owen Ellis, aged §5, clerk to
the Taranaki County Council. He collapsed shortly after reaching his office this morning. Ho was born at Westport, and was appointed county clerk about 30 years ago. He was a talented musician, and occupied his spare time in teaching the violin. He leaves a widow and five sons.
