CAR WRECKED IN CROSSING SMASH

DRIVER ARRESTED [Fek United Press Association .T AUCKLAND, July 3. A fortunate escape from injury was experienced by two occupants of a small closed motor car which was damaged extensively as the result of a collision with a train at the Asquith avenue level crossing. The train did not stop, according to residents who were attracted to the crossing by the sound of the crash, and no. report of an accident has been received by the railway authorities in Auckland. It is presumed that the crew of the train were rot aware that a collision had occurred. Mr F. W. Cole, who lives nearby, said he had heard the train and the crash. He went to the crossing and found a motor car on its side. The two occupants were clambering out of . the damaged car when Mr Cole arrived. Part of the motor car was found about 20yds on the city side of the crossing near the line, and a piece of one head lamp was picked up 10yds away. The front part of the car was wrecked, although the bodywork did not suffer so severely. The police were summoned 'and arrested the driver of the car.

In the Police Court; George Ernest Brown, aged 39, appeared before the magistrate charged with being intoxicated in charge of a car. The accused was remanded, bail of £25 being allowed. Application for the suppression of the name was refused.
