CRICKET TEST
SOUTH AFRICA IN THE LEAD ENGLAND DISMISSED FOR 198 BALASKAS CAPTURES FIVE WICKETS VISITORS' SECOND STRIKE—MITCHELL'S DASHING INNINGS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 1. (Received July 2, at 10.30 a.ra.) The weather was hot and overcast for tiio continuation of the second test. Hammond (12) opened vigorously, and Wyatt (37) was also enterprising, but a low ball from Dalton took Hammond’s stumps. The third wicket had added 54 runs in 50 minutes. The pitch was obviously responsive to the bowlers’ spin.
Ames was dropped by Siedle, and then Wyatt, smashing a short one. saw Nourse make a brilliant catch. Wyatt had 1 hatted, 120 minutes, and hit two boundaries.
Ames, who was uncomfortable facing Balaskas, was finally completely beaten by a googly. Holmes soon followed, and with four wickets having fallen in an hour, Langridge and Farrimond were naturally on the defensive. The Africans’ fielding was splendid. With the fall of Langridge’s wicket Balaskas had taken five for 36. He bowled unchanged to-day. The Africans started their second innings slowly. Siedel was dropped early by Mitchell, but was. caught low down at the wicket next over. Mitchell and Rowan settled down to scoring freely. Sutcliffe strained his leg chasing a ball, and retired. ‘ dDespite bowling changes, the partnership realised 104 in 125 minutes, when Rowan was out to the new leg-before rule.
Nourse, Cameron, Dalton, and Wade failed, bbt at stumps Mitchell was unconquered after giving a fine exhibition. Mitchell at 101 gave his only chance, thus far he has batted four hours and hit fifteen boundaries. , Details:—
